You may want to check out Goodspeeds History of Williamson County as there is a James Patton listed with a grandmother, Margaret Patton. Don't know what you know about your Margaret or Thomas Maltimore but since Wilson County and Williamson County are close to each other, it's worth a look. Here's what it says: James Patton, a prominent citizen of Williamson County, was born July 17, 1812. His father Jason Patton, was born in North Carolina in 1787, and came to Tennessee about 1802, where he was engaged in tilling the soil. His mother, Bithunia Bostick, was born in North Carolina about 1789, and came to Tennessee with her father in 1809. In 1811 she was married to Jason Patton and became the mother of nine children, three of whom are yet living. Mr. Patton died August 7, 1841, and his widow followed him in death May 10, 1870. Our subject's grandfather, James Patton, was born in Tennessee in 1760. The grandmother, Margaret (Wilson) Patton, emigrated from Scotland to Ireland and from there to North Carolina, where she was married. Our subject was reared on a farm, and with the exception of a few years that he spent trading in slaves, might be called a life-long farmer. In 1839 he married Miss Susan Thompson, a native of this State, born June 2, 1820, and the daughter of Jason and Susan (Cobb) Thompson. To Mr. and Mrs. Patton were born four children: Mary B., born December 7, 1841; Jason H., born August 5, 1849; Agnes J., born November 19, 1851, and Joseph J., deceased, born November 6, 1854. Mrs. Patton died December 18, 1881. Shortly after marriage he moved to Mississippi and ran a cotton plantation for ten years, after which he moved back to Tennessee. In 1850 he purchased the farm on which he now resides, it consists of 500 acres of first-class land in a fine state of cultivation. In 1854 he was elected justice of the peace and served the people in that capacity for about eighteen years. He was a conscript officer with the rank of major in the Confereathe service. In politics he is a Democrat.

James Armstrong Gant was an older brother of my ggggrandfather Jesse Bobo Gant. I came across the tombstone inscription in the book on Bedford County cemeteries and tried to find out what had happened. What little information I could find came from a researcher who later helped to write the book on the descendants of John Gant of Virginia. According to him, there was a shootout between James Gant and two men whose last name was Shearin. James Gant was killed as a result. It must have been something of a family squabble because one of his daughters was married to Mathew Shearin. In this small Gant Cemetery you will find the Shearin name mentioned as well. What caused the quarrel, I don't know. I don't think that he is the same one that was hanged at Richmond. I could be wrong but I'm basing my comments on what I was told by the researcher together with other information I have come across in various books about Bedford County. Sylvia Gant

Hi Carol, I have the following information but it is not my direct line. Hopefully someone else on the list will be able to correct me if I state something incorrectly or be able to give more info. Fannie A. Jennings (March 20, 1863-December 01, 1944) is the daughter of Edmond W. Jennings (February 11, 1818 - November 20, 1912). She married first, on August 05, 1882 in Bedford County, W. Don Madison (September 07, 1852 - April 15, 1887). He is buried in Madison Cemetery in Bedford County. He was the son of Levi Madison and Nancy J. Collier (August 11, 1829-June 22, 1893). Nancy is also buried in Madison Cemetery. Fannie and Don had two children: Vera Don Madison and Nanie Lee Madison. Fannie married second, David S. Curle (June 25, 1841-July 07, 1903) on March 30, 1896 in Bedford County. They are both buried in the Willow Mount Cemetery in Shelbyville. Edmond W. Jennings was the son of Robert Cross Jennings (July 30, 1789 NC - September 02, 1875) and Mary Word (March 11, 1788 VA - March 30, 1827). Robert is buried in the Reeves-Wheeler Cemetery in Bedford County. In addition to Fannie, Edmond also had the following children: William Marion Jennings (May 30, 1857-March 12, 1924) Wade H. Jennings (born Abt. 1859) Samuel H. Jennings (born Abt. 1864) Sallie Jennings (born Abt. 1868) I don't have a mother listed for the 5 children of Edmond but do have that he also married Elizabeth G. Couch (October 18, 1822 - January 18, 1846 buried in Couch-Patton Cemetery, Bedford County). The COUCH link is where my interest comes in. Hope this helps, Kathryn <snip> Does anyone have any information on Fannie Curle, mentioned in a previous posting? I believe she is my great-great aunt. List Members: A few weeks ago, there was a query on this list about a hanging in Richmond. I have had some recent information passed on to me about this that I will share. The party that was hung was a James Gant Sr. There is an entry in The Cemetery Records of Bedford County, Tennessee on page 186. He is buried in the Gant Cemetery that is located about 1 mile South of Blue Stocking Hollow Road Off Petersburg Highway. When the information for compiling the cemetery book was put together, the stone read: James Gant, Sr.; Born December 31, 1783; Murdered July 27, 185- (gone) & Elizabeth Gant; Born October 20, 1787; Died June 4, 1869. It is my understanding that there was a monument there at one time that explained the circumstances of this incident, but it has since been destroyed and I am assuming that this cemetery has been abandoned.
