    2. Hi Jolene- I posted a reply on the Bedford site but will send one her. I'm sorry but I found out today from another lady that the Chas. W. Phillips is not my ancestor so I guess I do not have any connection to Bedford Co. at all, sorry.

This family of Smith's have been SO hard to research and after I noticed the connection of Bedford Co families in Arkansas, I just had to ask. My grandfather was born in 1882 and his mother, Mary Rains Smith, died c 1885, then his father, Joseph Y Smith died c 1890. He was so young that he had very little memories of them. When he moved to Tn in the 1920's I am not sure he even knew that he had relatives still living in Bedford County on his father's side and McNairy Co on his mother's side. So Sad! Sure hope someone comes along with some info on this Smith family. It would be so greatly appreciated!

    3. I have family (mostly Hamil) and they had allied family and associates who were in Bedford Co., TN in 1820. My family moved west to Haywood Co., TN before moving to East Texas in 1838. So there were probably friends and relatives in Texas and Arkansas. Also, I am trying to find information on Elizabeth McBride, wife of John McBride who was born in about 1765. I have different information saying her maiden name was Williams and also Stone. Would like more information. Will share what I have. Reta DeShields Parton

    2. The migration from Tennessee to Arkansas started earlier than the 1870s. My DeShields (Dashiell) family left Beechgrove, Bedford County, Tennessee between 1834 to 1839. On a recent trip to Beech Grove, I interviewed a Mr. Bob Jacobs who has done research on the area for many years and his mother also did research on the area. He told me it was normal for families to share their land with their children. When lands were divided so many times, they began to be too small to support the family and at that time their slaves. I have noticed most I have looked at began to move when the land mass was around 250 acres. I have a heavy concentration of Bedford County names who came to Marion County/Boone County Arkansas in the 1840s and before. They said they were going to Oregon but that seemed a little early for that migration. I found where Dr. James McBride who was a missionary to Oregon said when he arrived in the 1846, he was greeted by many of his old friends from the states who had arrived before him. I believe he is the son of John McBride but have no proof. I believe he was going with my family to Oregon but my family (who would have been his sister) stopped in Arkansas to allow one of the wives to have a child and ended up staying for several years. I believe one Deshields brother may have went on to Missouri and stayed there. However, I have no proof as of yet Dr. James McBride, the missionary, was the James McBride born March 28, 1804 to John and Elizabeth McBride. Still searching on this one. Any help would be appreciated. Hoping to get more info from the submitter on that. Will keep your address and let you know if I find Sarah. Do you have any info on her parents??? Thanks, Cindy

    3. I used to wonder about that, too. However, this was a new country and each time new areas were opened up (taken from the Indians), these people would go for hopes of cheap land and a better life. I think they often found it wasn't a better life, but were probably too broke to return. All my grandfather's brothers went west and did, apparently, do quite well. He stayed in Bedford County. 3. Cindy, I can't remember if I asked you about this issue before having recently seen entries on the TNGENWEB site about migration to Arkansas, but I have a Sarah Smith in my family that married Barton Posey. Their daughter, Betty Posey RUSS, was my 2g grandfather's first wife. Is there a relationship here? I'll have to check the data I downloaded off the TNGENWEB site for the Russ migration to the Arkansas area in the meantime. Hoping ot hear from you soon! Phillips who was born in Bedford was the same as the Charles Phillips who married Charity in 1886 as I could eliminate that individual as being my GGF since my GGF married in 1883 and my GGM lived until 1901.
