    1. [TNBEDFOR] Web sites of Importance to Bedford County
    2. Hello Everyone: It is so nice to see such an increased activity to this group as well as to see some new folks joining the group. Since there are some new folks that may not know of some important websites containing Bedford County information, I wanted to repeat some of this information here: <A HREF="http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/surname.htm">Bedford County Surnames Resource</A> or, if the above hyperlink does not work, copy this URL into your browser line http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/surname.htm The above site (you will need to scroll to about 1/4 of the way down the page) lists almost 1200 Bedford Co. surnames and/or their researchers. The site has the surname, the email address of people researching the surname, and in some cases, has a link to their family web pages. <A HREF="http://www.migrations.org/">Migration Project</A> or, http://www.migrations.org/ Once you have selected "Tennessee" and "Bedford County" (under the county search box), you will find, I believe, listings of 80 Bedford Co. surnames and their migration information. This is a great site for anyone trying to figure out where people moved from/to. If you have not contributed to this site, it is certainly worthwhile and important. Just think of all the relatives that you may have (or have had in the past) that are "missing in action". <A HREF="http://home.flash.net/~coley/bedford_index.html">Bedford County, TN Resources</A> or, cut and paste: http://home.flash.net/~coley/bedford_index.html Lila Coley maintains this site and it is wonderful. It contains a multitude of information such as bible, census, church and other information on Bedford County. Lila also has some great links to other websites of interest. <A HREF="http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/marthagail2.htm">Marty's Bedford County Page</A> or: http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/marthagail2.htm This is actually part of the Rutherford County webpage. But, thanks to Marty, there are several items of interest to Bedford County, namely Loose Wills and Shelbyville Gazette obits (1931-1935). These are just a few of some websites that might be of interest to some of you. Thanks to such a great group of people, Lucy Dunaway Zeier Minden, Nevada (researching Bedford Co. surnames of: Chambers, Crutcher, Dixon, Dunaway, Galbreath, Gordon, Hall, King, McKamey, Rice, and Sharp)

    1. [TNBEDFOR] Will look-up, William SHARP
    2. Roberta Sharp
    3. Marty, I wonder if a will exists among the loose wills for William SHARP. According to the 1850 Bedford Co. TN census, William Sharp, age 59, b. VA, was living with his wife, Sarah S. [Hancock] Sharp, age 51, b. NC, and a 15-year-old daughter, Ritter, who later married James M. Hoover of Coffee County. Possibly there were offspring that I have not been able to identify, but William's children not living in that household in 1850 included William H. Sharp, Robert Martin Sharp (m. Louisa Jacobs of Coffee County TN), Elizabeth Sharp (m. John Bell), and John Thomas Sharp. Although I know that William and Sarah were in Bedford County in 1850, they seem to have disappeared by 1860. So far I have not been able to determine whether they moved away or died in Bedford County. Roberta

    1. [TNBEDFOR] Offers of lookups--Thanks!
    2. Barry and Mary Ann Holder
    3. Thanks to everyone who offered to do lookups for me in the 1880 census. I went back to the LDS site and tried searching the entire state for the surname Holder. I finally found my missing Dennis Holder as "Danie Holder" his wife Martha as "Joann"???? and his children James, Samantha, Louis J. (listed as Juddah), Laura (listed as Landra), Lewis (listed as Ludwig!), M. (don't know who this is) and Burl Woodard. Another question, as a footnote to this household entry was the notation that it is was an "HCP entry." Anyone know what an "HCP entry" is? Mary Ann

    3. Mary Ann the 1880 census that the LDS put out was people that read the census and if they couldn't read the name very will they guessed at the spelling and so the name may not be spelled the way it should. Can you write me back and tell me the name you are looking for and I will look in mine to see if I can find them for you. 2. Barry and Mary Ann Holder
    3. It's been awhile since I tossed this out, but since there's been quite a bit of activity lately, here goes--Looking for any information on my ggggrandfather Champion Bailey. I believe he lived in the Wartrace area of Bedford county and the Christiana area of Rutherford county. I try to keep my information in the form of a timeline, so here's what I have: 1810--Champion is on the Rutherford county census with his wife (name unknown) and family. There is also an older man in the household, Champion's father or father-in-law? 1818--Land grant in Rutherford county 1820--Bedford county census 1827--Land deed on Wartrace Fork 1833--Marriage record in Rutherford county to Jane Johnson 1840--Rutherford county census living close to his father-in-law Edward Johnson 1850--Rutherford county census, 74yrs of age I know of one child by his first wife, Martha Bailey who married Martin Hoover. My gggrandmother Clementine Bailey was a daughter by his 2nd wife Jane. She married Samuel Hill and lived in the Noah/Beech Grove area. I have found Champion Bailey as "Champ Bayly" and "Campian Baily." Any tidbit of information would be appreciated. Mary Ann Holder

    1. Re: [TNBEDFOR] Stephens
    2. Hi Alicia, You mentioned the Stephens line. I too have Stephens. My ggg-grandfather was Eli Stephens. According to the earlier Census Records he was born 1808. I have never figured out WHO his father was. The old John Stephens that came to Bedford County (1876 - 1831) is the closest I can find. This John Stephens Jr was married two times. Gaskey Hartfield and Martha Ann Gulley. There is a bible record for this family. There is also an estate settlement where there is an argument over the division of the estate that is mentioned in a book by Helen and Tim Marsh. There is a James (Elijah?) Stephens born 1818 according to the bible records; However, I know my Eli was born before that because of the age of his children. I would love to see the actual bible, I wonder if it was transcribed wrong. There is an Eli Stephens who lived in Cannon County, and owned part of the square (This was in 1840). In 1850 my Eli was suppositly living in Blount County, ALABAMA, with wife Zubia. I find Eli again in 1870 in Bedford County with James Andrew Allen and (Nancy?) Mary Allen (who I believe is his daughter). There is a Sarah Posey who he applied for a marriage license, and then the license was returned, then July 30, 1870 Eli applies for a marriage license to Katie Posey. The last documented proof I have of Eli Stephens is his divorce decree from Katie Posey in 1883. 1870 Bedford county - Dist 10, pg 279/B James Allen age 25 Mary Allen age 30 (Ala) James Allen age 11 Martha Allen age 3 Ely Stephens age 52 (TN) married in July??? is this "Susan" "Katie" Posey? Sarah Stephens age 17 1880 Bedford County - Dist 21, page 4 (sister book pg 73) HH 28 Eli Stephens age 62 (works in a stove factory) (AL AL AL) Feby ? age 26 (US) James age 6 Mattie age 4 John age 2 Eli had a son named Noah Stephens he was born around 1848 - 1849 according to the Blount County Ala Census. This is my gg-grandfather. I have found his marriage license to Martha Jane ______ in 1866. Family lore says her name is Martha Jane Allen.. but the marriage license says Martha Shoffner on one side, and Martha Vincent on the other side... Suppositly Martha Stephens was the person who executed Eli's estate, but I have never found this paper. I will pull up what I have on the Stephens and try to send you some more information on the WHOLE line. Later, Marty

    3. Marty, I am willing to help copy records or any way I can help. I am kin to several families in this area of TN. I have a little information about these families that I have collected. I will share with anyone that may want to know what I have. My mother is a Coleman, her grandmother was a Boone. I have very little information about our Coleman branch, more about the Boone branch-Floyd, Watson, Howard, Norman, Stephens and Whitmore. Coleman brides were--Byrd, Floyd, Anderson and Southall. Most of what I have is from the internet and a genealogy book an aunt gave me about the Stephens family. 2. The forename "Temperance" may indicate that your ancestor was a Quaker or of Quaker ancestry. That could be an important clue. The Quakers have great records- births, deaths, marriages, etc. They even kept records of those folks that they de-fellowshipped. That was usually because a member married outside of the faith. Just something you all might want to check out. Ann
