Mike, You must go to Shelbyville one day. It is wonderful and the people are just as friendly there as they are online. I remember the first time I went, in 1978, I fell in love with the town and it's people. Lewisburg, just west of it in Marshall county was the same way. The folks in the Court House are so willing to help you and make you feel "down Home". I have never been anywhere else that they have done that for me. Plan to spend a few days at the least. Shelbyville has a great genealogy department. Also, Murpheesboro, just a few miles north, has a wonderful department also, with lots of helpful people. We are retired Navy, my husband did 27 years, and I would go down and stay at Arnold Air Force Base just 20 miles east at Tullahoma. Just go straight out 64 from Shelbyville. It is an AF Base so the rates are very reasonable. Great lodging and again the folks there are great. Hope you get to go soon and enjoy it as much as we have over the years. I was from KS and then we got stationed in Memphis so it was only a 4 hours drive for me from there and I visited several times in the 8 years we were there. Good luck on your trek and your retirement. Dear Kathryn, On this lovely Sunday morning I want to say "thank you" for the extra effort you put forth in responding to pleas for help! The thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your replies is genuine and graciously heartfelt. Hopefully one day before I retire from the Navy I'll be able to visit Bedford County to get a better feel of my family's past. So many people, especially you, have shared so much information with me that I might not have otherwise found on my own for many years. You have truly made me feel a part of Shelbyville; I can't wait to visit! Cheers, Mike Kendall Lemoore, CA Researching: KENDALL, COOKSON, CROOK, MULVEY, GREENHEAD, NEWGREEN, RILEY (England) KENDALL, RUSS, YOUNG, FLEMING and related families (USA) ----Original Message Follows---- From: Kathryn Hopkins <kathopkins@yahoo.com> Reply-To: TNBEDFOR-L@rootsweb.com To: TNBEDFOR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNBEDFOR] David S. Curle (1841-1903) Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 21:29:49 -0800 (PST) Hi Mike, I did want to pass along that David is buried with both of his wives. His second wife, Fannie A. Jennings, was the daughter of Edmond W. Jennings (February 11, 1818- November 20, 1912) and had at least 5 other siblings. She was also previously married on August 05, 1882 in Bedford County to W. Don Madison (September 07, 1852- April 15, 1887). He is buried in the Madison Cemetery in Bedford County. They had at least two children, Vera Don Madison and Nanie Lee Madison. Perhaps someone else on the list can assist with some of these details. There are some census lookups that could be done that will help with the more details. I did find a "David", age 8 in the 1850 census in the Household of a "Portland" Curle in Franklin County. From the land records below, it looks like a Portland Curle was in Rutherford County before moving to Bedford, as early as 1825. I did not find a record for Portland in the Bedford County Cemetery book. You might want to have a look around Franklin or Rutherford Counties. Defitinely worth looking at the 1860 and 1870 census records to see if you find them. Hope the following helps; I will pass more info along if I find it. People can buy a very large copy of the Beers map, I think it is about 3 ft by 4 ft. One of Bedford websites has a link to the man selling it. Pat

Ewing, according to my records. And I have found nothing so far indicating that James left land to Mary.
I have been trying for a long time to find the documentation that proves George Clayton Neill(Nancy Ellison) was son of James and Hannah Clayton Neill. It isn't that I don't believe it; I DO. But I have been searching for that proof via documentation. Lately I have been going through James' land deeds in Bedford County and found that he gave to all of his sons, parts of a 392 acre grant except to George Clayton and to James' daughter, Margaret who married Wm. D. Orr. I do have extracts of land deeds of Wm. D. Orr and several of George Clayton Neill.. I can find no land deed that James gives anything to George Clayton. Of course, James did have a will and that is mentioned in a land deed but the will apparently is not extant -- possibly destroyed when the Bedford Co. Courthouse burned. Can anyone give me any clue to hang on to; to pursue finding the proof that I want?
Marty, I found my list. First, I was wrong about Normandy. Normandy was in District 25. I don't think we have any serious differences of opinion except District 18 borders Marshall County and College Grove is in Williamson County and is not the same place as Center Grove. Some other differences may be because there have been shifts in district lines, however I am not aware of any shifts. They should be recorded in the county court minutes IF IT HAPPENED. It is my understanding that these districts were established in 1835 and that they remained the same until after 1980. Anybody know the exact date? They are still referred to as the CIVIL districts, while the new districts, which are shown on the map sanctioned by the county, are called the voting districts. Districts 12 - 17 went to Marshall County in 1836. Coffee County was formed about the same time, but apparently that was anticipated when the districts were laid out and the land that went to Coffee County was not included as Bedford County districts. Here is what I have. Can you add any communities to my list? Do I need to shift some? Dist 1 - Beech Grove, Puncheon Camp Dist 2 - Fairfield, Haley Mount Reserve, Bethsalem, Knob Creek (split between 2 and 3) Dist 3 - Wartrace, Horse Mountain Dist 4 - Old Trickem, Bell Buckle Dist 5 - Deason Dist 6 - North Shelbyville, Jackson Dist 7 - Shelbyville Dist 8 - Dist 9 - Longview Center Grove (9 or 10) Dist 10 - Rover, Coopertown Dist 11 - Unionville Dist 18 - Thompson's Ford, Hall's Mill, Wheel Dist 19 - Bedford, Richmond Dist 20 - Pleasant Grove, Dist 21 - Dist 22 - New Herman, Mt. Hermon, Dean Dist 23 - Himesville, Singleton Dist 24 - Hilltop, Raus, Flat Creek Dist 25 - Normandy, Rowesville, Anthony Mill, Midway Thanks, Carolyn
Johnny Reed Bedford County Register 108 Northside Square Shelbyville, TN 37160 (615) 684-5719 I would suggest that you call with a list of the Books and page #s you want and get a price. The problem with that, though, is that about 1/3 of the deeds go over to another page. When I have gone in the office and gotten the books down and marked the pages I wanted, I was charged 25 cents a page. If I were going to estimate, I would send $2 for each deed on a mail order. That should cover copying and postage.
