    1. [TNBEDFOR] Obituary of Thomas Finch (1796-1871)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: FINCH, SCRUGGS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IhB.2ACI/339 Message Board Post: Obituary of Thomas Finch (1796-1871) The Home Journal, Winchester, TN November 30, 1871 GATHERED TO HIS FATHERS.–On the 17th of this month Thomas Finch, Esq., of this place, breathed his last. The long residence of the deceased among this people, and the prominence of his name, render a brief biography quite appropriate. He was born Nov. 12, 1796, in Mecklenburg county, Virginia. His father and mother emigrated in 1798 to Bourbon county, Kentucky, and here our subject was reared to manhood, and was one of fifteen children. At the age of 21 he came to Tennessee, and married Miss Edna Scruggs, of Bedford county. It was the Fall of 1818 when he settled about one mile and a half from Winchester, and has been a resident in our midst ever since. Most of his life was spent in farming, but he has filled several offices of honor and trust. About the year 1828 he was elected to the office of Coroner. From the year 1830 to July 1839 he served as Sheriff, which office he then resigned, and was elected in August following as one of two Representatives to which Franklin county was entitled in the Legislature, Thomas Howard, Esq., being the colleague of our subject. After serving his time in the Legislature, Thomas Finch retired to private life, but in 1846 he was elected Justice of the Peace for th! e first civil district of this county, in which office he served, with the exception of six years, until his death. Thomas Finch was married three times. His first wife died in 1832. In ‘33 he married Miss Francis [sic] B. Hudspeth. In 1846 she died and he married Miss Ann E. Moffett, and she died in 1867. In that year he joined the Baptist church in this place and continued a consistent member up to the departure of his soul into the shadowy realms of eternity. Thomas Finch was the father of eight children, five of whom are living. Six were born to him by his first wife, the other two were the offspring of his second wife. Of the five living, two are male, one of whom is Capt. Thos. H. Finch, our Clerk & Master. The other, named Matt, went to Texas in 1849, and lives there still. He was one of the first to volunteer in the war against Mexico, and fought bravely at Buena Vista. Capt. Thos. Finch, our Clerk & Master, went to Mexico among those who answered the last call for volunteres [sic], and in the late war between the North and South, he lost his right arm at the battle of Missionary Ridge, if we mistake not. And Thomas Finch, Esq., is "gathered to his fathers."

    2. We scheduled workers to hand out the local copies in Shelbyville on Dec 15--but no books; again on Dec 29--same result; our new schedule is for Jan 12. I just spoke to the publisher's representative and he encourages us to postpone till Jan 19 as there has been some problem getting the right color material for the covers. I really do think it will be here soon, but when I look in my crystal ball for the exact date, there is a lot of fog over the calendar. 2. Pat Nichols
    3. Where could I locate a marriage record from 1857? The LDS site lists David Carlton Allen m America Jane Rainey Bedford County, 3 mar 1857. I found them in Missouri in 1880, the census indicates that America was born in Tennessee, David in North Carolina. Does anyone have any info on Raineys in Bedford County or could tell me where or if I could get a copy of the marriage record? These are my ggrandparents. Based on America's age in the census, she would have been born abt 1839. Thanks, Pat Nichols

    2. Greg and Ginger Keeling
    3. John, My gg grandfather was Elzy Keeling. He married Sarah. There is no clear proof yet as to Sarah's last name, but there is very strong evidence that she was either Sarah Hodge or Sarah Wilson, since both Elzy and Sarah are buried in Wilson Cemetery just across the Bedford Co. line in Coffee Co. The Robert Wilson, Jr. family are the Wilsons for whom the cemetery is named. Robert Wilson, Jr.'s wife was Elizabeth Hodge; she is a daugther of John Hodge and Sarah. Best guess at this point is that Elzy's wife Sarah was a sister of either Elizabeth Hodge or a sister of Robert Wilson, Jr. johnspencerinsfca@yahoo.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Hodge, Hodges > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IhB.2ACI/338 > > Message Board Post: > > Searcing for descendants, ancestors, any information regarding the early Hodge families of Bedford County, TN. > > I do have a particular interest in Paterack Hodge that is listed in the 1830 Census. 1. [TNBEDFOR] Dyer-Wilhoit
    2. Looking for information on the family of Lewis Wilhoit and his son Turner who lived in Bedford Co., TN in 1840. Turner Wilhoit married Sophronia Dyer who was born in TN. I suspect she was also from Bedford, but have no information on her parents. Lewis Wilhoit was married to Frances Moore Christmas. I have noticed some items mentioned on the list that might be of interest: the Dyer Cemetery near Shelbyville, and the will of Martha Dyer (or any other Dyers, for that matter). Thanks for your help, Judy Penrod Purcell Duncanville, TX

Surnames: Hodge, Keller, Green, Stephens Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IhB.2ACI/338.1 Message Board Post: I, too, am interested in the Hodge families of Bedford Co. I am descended from Jacob Keller of Burke Co, NC. Jacob was a neighbor of Francis Hodge, Robert Hodge, William Hodge and others up until his death in 1813. Some people think his wife Jane was a member of the Hodge family. At any rate, some of the Keller family were already in TN when Jacob died and Jane and the rest of the family moved to Bedford County immediately after his death. Jane's son, Francis H. Keller (the H. has never been defined), is my ggg-grandfather. I was born and raised in Bedford Co and live about 35 miles away in Williamson Co now. There is a book called Pioneers of Coffee County, TN by Alice Daniel Pritchard with information on the Hodge family. She believes, with good clues, but no absolute proof, that Robert Hodge, Jr. of Burke Co, NC and Bedford Co, TN is the father of William C. Hodge (b. about 1783, md. Gilla Green) and John Hodge (b. about 1785, md. Sarah Stephens). Patterson Hodge, the son of John and Sally Stephens Hodge, moved to Jefferson Co, Illinois. I do think there was another branch of the Hodge family, whose connection, if any, I don't know, but who lived in the same NE corner of Bedford Co and in Coffee Co. The names I recall include Charles and Edmond Hodge (maybe Phillip). These were connected to Welcome Hodge of Williamson Co, TN. Some of this family were later found in west Tennessee.
