I descend from Robert and Jane Gaston Davis through their son, Alfred Warren (born 1811) and Hannah Riddle Williams Davis. Alfred Warren Davis had 17 children, four of whom died but 13 lived to adulthood. The names of some of the girls are unknown to me. Perhaps one of them could be your Elizabeth. Robert and Jane Davis' first child, William Gaston Davis, was born 1794. Also, a son of Alfred Warren and Hannah Davis, James Carson Davis-born 25 April 1837, married Caroline Bates. Caroline was the daughter of Willis E. and Betsey Hancock Bates. Could these Bates be in your line? In the 1870 Census of Palmetto community, county of Bedford; Zade Price age47 and his wife Polly Ann age 47 were listed as farmers. Their children were Marzee, age 14 (who was my Great Grandmother), William, age 11, James age 10 and Elizabeth age 7. He married Sarah. There is no clear proof yet as to Sarah's last name, but there is very strong evidence that she was either Sarah Hodge or Sarah Wilson, since both Elzy and Sarah are buried in Wilson Cemetery just across the Bedford Co. line in Coffee Co. The Robert Wilson, Jr. family are the Wilsons for whom the cemetery is named. Robert Wilson, Jr.'s wife was Elizabeth Hodge; she is a daugther of John Hodge and Sarah. Best guess at this point is that Elzy's wife Sarah was a sister of either Elizabeth Hodge or a sister of Robert Wilson, Jr. As I looked through my records checking all this, I found my latest research (from about a year ago) had turned up a further lead on this, but it was as to the identity of Robert Wilson. My notes indicate he and Sarah were the children of a John Wilson according to John's will. Greg Keeling

Hi Pat, Mike has a good idea about searching some of the websites and you may want to. It is possible that the LDS record could have the wrong county listed. If you are sure they married in Bedford County, you should know that all marriage records dated before 1861 were destroyed in the Court House fire of 1863. So, since your record is from 1857, it probably doesn't exist in Bedford County. However, a descendant could have a copy or have a bible record. On one of my lines I was fortunate enough to find an original copy in with a pension application for Civil War service - this was at the National Archives (NARA) in Washington, DC. Good luck with your seach - and don't forget to search "Raney" as some of the early Bedford County records have that spelling. Pat, Pay a visit to the USSGENEB site for TN. There are links to all the counties and Bedford has a wonderful site including addresses to loca resources, I believe. Might search for their marriage online as well with their search engine searching for one of the parties. I like the short display vice the long but to each his one.
