Goodmorning! Does anyone out along the line have access to Land Records? My understanding is that William Rutledge inherited land when his parents died. So did his only known sister Sarah. This should have been before 1823. Sarah may have been married by then so a different surname is possible. I would sure appreciate help with this. While I'm on these two how far back do Marriage records go in Bedford? How do I find them? It is spring so I'm once more working on my brick wall Hope someone can help some-I sure would apppreciat it. Ginny in Wyoming

The trial record for Bedford County will be in the archive (which is only open on Wed morning from 8 to 12). THESE LEDGER BOOKS ARE NOT INDEXED. You can spend all day reading and never find a thing. Since you know the date though it should be fairly simple to locate. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harvey Wade" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2005 1:08 PM Subject: [TNBEDFOR] Clement Wade Shooting > The reference to the Nashville Banner article should have been Sept 25, > 1884 rather than 1890. > > Sorry, > > Harvey Wade > [email protected] > > > ==== TNBEDFOR Mailing List ==== > Visit the Bedford County Historical Society pages: > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnbchs/index.html > > ============================== > New! The reference to the Nashville Banner article should have been Sept 25, 1884 rather than 1890. Sorry, Harvey Wade [email protected]
Since we are talking about murder trials, I am trying to locate information on the trial of a Mr. Brown and a Mr. Pigg who shot and killed my gg grandfather Sept 24, 1884. Clement Wade was the gatekeeper on the first toll gate on the Shelbyville-Lewisburg Pike. He got into some sort of argument with Brown and Pigg and they shot him twice and my gg grandmother once. Patsy Wade survived the shooting and her obit appeared in the Shelbyville Gazette in April of 1890. The obit mentioned that she was the long time gatekeeper on the Lewisburg Pike. I found the account of the shooting of "old man Wade" in the Sept 25, 1890 edition of the Nashville Banner and the arrest and charging of Brown and Pigg. I searched the next two months worth of issues of the paper but never ran across another mention. The mocrofilm of the paper is at TSLA. Where would I locate the trial record of Brown and Pig? Harvey Wade [email protected]
Since the crimes both of you have mentioned happened in the 20th century, the trial records should still be available. When we all do genealogy research, we are accustomed to just viewing Civil Records. Ask to view the indexes for Criminal Court. There may be several different records and courts from which you can view the indexes. Once you do that, you can ask them to pull the case. I have read criminal court cases back into the 1860s and 1870s. They are fascinating. Don't fail to check the Supreme Court records in the State Archives as well. You definitely should be able to find those old trial transcripts. They may be a bit more difficult to find if the trial was moved on a change of venue to another county. But the records should state to which county the trail was transferred. Good Luck! This is interesting to me, as I have a great-grandfather who was convicted of killing two Shelbyville (or Bedford County??) policemen on October 31, 1911. There are conflicting stories as to why this happened, but our family has said that bootlegging and betrayal were the motivating factors. Marion Anderson spent over 20 years (maybe 30 years) in state penitentiary for these murders. Does anyone have any info or insight into this incident or the participants (especially Marion Anderson and family)? I understand Marion may have had a brother in Shelbyville who was a barber, but don't know his name. -----Original Message----- From: Martha Mendez [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 11:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNBEDFOR] Help With A Branch of My Family - Chambers Hi Lucy, There is a newspaper clipping on this. (My grandfather is Sam Helton <grin>. When you get ready for the rest of the story send me a private E mail). I also remember reading where Wiley sold some property right after this shooting, so it was apparent he was trying to raise some money. As to what happened in the trial I don't have a clue. Do you know? Later, Marty 3 Johnnie E. Barlett b: Aug 1888 in Tennessee > ................ +Sumner A. Dillard b: 05 Mar 1883 in Tennessee d: 02 > Mar > 1936 (he was Police Chief and was shot and killed by Wiley Troop) Shelbyville Gazette - March 5, 1936, page 1 POLICE CHIEF DIED FROM GUN SHOT WOUND SUNDAY Wiley Troup charged, with first degree murder, bound over to circuit court Shelbyville and Bedford County people were inexpressibly shocked and grieved on last Sunday morning to learn that S.A. Dillard, police chief, was dead from a gun shot, alledged to have been fired by the hand of Wiley Troop. The report of the shooting is as follows: Chief Dillard was killed Sunday morning at about 11 o'clock as he and patrolman J.W. Drake were bringing two prisoners to the city after arresting them on Sims road, 2 1/2 miles from town. In the auto with Chief Dillard were Patrolman Drake and two prisoners, Sam Helton and Miss Hazel Lee Delffs. Chief Dillard and patrolman Drake, while inside the city limits, recongized a passing auto occupied by Helton and Misses Delffs as a liquor car and gave chase, Patrolman Drake reported. The chase continued outside the city limits and ended on Sims road when Patrolman Drake shot down two tires on the liquor car. Two and one half gallons of whiskey were found in the car. The car was owned by Troop, Patrolman Drake reported. Chief Dillard and Patrolman Drake were putting Helton and Miss Delffs into the police car when another car arrived at the arrest sceen, occupied by Troop and two other men. The two officers, with Helton and Miss Delffs as prisoners, had driven several hundred feet back toward the city when Troop fired at their car three times with a 25 - 20 calibre rifle, Patrolman Drake reported. One of the bullets entered the rear of the car and went into Chief Dillard head behind his right ear. He died instantly, Drake said. The Chief was sitting on the right and of the rear seat with the two prisoners and Drake was driving at the time. A splinter of the bullet hit Drake on the neck, but he was not badly injured. "The chief died instantly, Drake said." "As soon as Troop shot I stoped the car and lay down across the hood of the car waiting for him to come down the road, with my gun ready, but he cut across a field and went another way." Troop was arrested and hour and a half later by Patrolman Drake and Patrolman A. Reynolds while he was in route to the county jail to surrender. He had telephoned Sheriff T.E. Gant that he was on his way there to surrender, it was reported. Troop was held without bond on a charge of murder. No inquest was ordered. Helton and Miss Delff were charged with felonious transportation of whiskey. The woman has been released under bond. Bearden and Trolinger were arrested on charges of aiding and abetting, first degree murder, and released under bond. Dillard has been chief of Shelbyville police since last October. He had formerly been a carpenter. He was a member of the Christian Church here. Survivors include his wife and a son. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 2:49 PM Subject: [TNBEDFOR] Help With A Branch of My Family - Chambers > Hi Everyone: > > My father's words are echoing in my ears "if you don't publish your data > ... > it is not worth the paper it is written on." Hi Lucy, There is a newspaper clipping on this. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 2:49 PM Subject: [TNBEDFOR] Help With A Branch of My Family - Chambers > Hi Everyone: > > My father's words are echoing in my ears "if you don't publish your data > ... > it is not worth the paper it is written on." Hi Everyone: My father's words are echoing in my ears "if you don't publish your data ... it is not worth the paper it is written on." So, I have decided to move forward with publishing my book on the Dunaway family of Bedford County. Needless to say, there are many allied family names including the Chambers. Unfortunately, I am finding very little on this family other than vital statistics -- which makes for a VERY dry book. So, can anyone: 1) Fill in any of the blanks for this family? 2) Know any living descendants of this family? 3) Have any stories involving this family? 4) Or by some miracle, have any photographs of these people? My husband's G.Grandfather was James A. Thompson who lived in Shelbyville. Don't know of a Cannon connection though. I have searched for a Thompson tie, but so far have not. found one. Who were your Thompsons? There were alot of early Thompsons in Bedford Co., I have learned. It is not known that there were any settlers in the Bedford Co, TN area prior to 1805. A number of newspaper records have been published by Tim and Helen Marsh and a book that covers the 1910-1919 period was published by Jerry Cook. The Bedford Co Historical Quarterly is in its 31st year of publication. That is probably your best source for the sort of information you describe.
