Shelbyville Gazette - May 15, 1930 - page 1 Margaret Shofner Pitiful Tragedy At Flat Creek One of the most heart rending tragedies in the history of Bedford County, occurred last Wednesday night when Margaret Shofner, the eight-year-old daughter was burned to death, and her father, Mr. Porter Shofner was terribly burned in attempting her rescue. He is now in the Bedford County Hospital with some chance for his recovery. The death of the sweet little girl was a terrible shock to her parents and friends. Mr. Shofner's home was about eight miles south of here and one mile from Flat Creek. He is a rural carrier on Routh one from Flat Creek. Mrs. Shofner and two smaller children escaped from the burning building and Mr. Shofner was burned when he sought to enter the blazing structure to rescue the eight-year-old girl, whose body was later found burned beyond recognition. The fire which is believed to have started from a chicken brooder in one of the rear rooms was discovered by the four year old boy who with his younger sister were sleeping in the room with Mr and Mrs. Shofner. The little girl, who perished in the fire was sleeping in an adjoining room, it was reported. When the fire was discovered the father and mother rushed out of the house carrying the two smaller children and left them in the yard. The father then rushed back into the house but was unable to save the third child. Mr. Shofner is one the most prominent farmers in that section.

You can contact familytree DNA to find out the types of tests available. The Deep ancestory test is the type that can tell you about the Native American ancestory, http://www.familytreedna.com/ngene.html or another place is: http://www.genetree.com/product/native-american-test.asp This one is more expensive, but it also examines more markers and offers more detailed results specific to Native American heritage. -Sherry >Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2005 23:52:41 EDT >From: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Message-ID: <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: TNBEDFOR-D Digest V05 #160 >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-501610F4 > >Ok, I know very little about the DNA testing. I did DNA testing too and it has helped to rule out some 6 or 7 Holden lines from Bedford county and elsewhere as not being from my line. It helps eliminate lines so you don't go chasing after lines that are not related to you. Carol, I can highly recommend DNA testing. I had a "possibility" to my next SORRELLS generation back who I believed was in the 1810 Surry Co., NC Census then came to Bedford Co., TN in the 1820. No way to prove that it was the same family-but through the DNA testing of a "known" descendant and my father-we have proved out the line and found another cousin on the line that we didn't know about. We have tied two brothers together from the Bedford county area, in 1804/1840, Wells Cooper, born N.C. about 1780's and Zacheus Cooper, born 1779 in N.C.. We have a paper trail for both of them and this confirms the connection for us. They were grandsons of John Cooper who left a will in 1794, naming all of his children. We have connected with two of his sons, Samuel (father of Zacheus and Wells) and James Cooper who stayed in N.C. Actually Baucom is a town. I just don't remember where it is. It is either in Bedford County or near the border thereof. Marion would have been born around 1879. The 2 deed records were for the years 1875-1877 Marion shows up as follows: 1860 census - Livingston was hoh, age 48, Eliza (46), A. A. (19) (female), Joseph N. (17), John L. (15), Thomas T. (13), Martha E. (10), Marion (26) (male) and Nathan (24) in the Western Div. of Dist. 18; listed like this at the end they could be extended family members. 1870 census - There's an M. Anderson age 36 with Sarah J. (35) William (8) and Mary C. (4) in Dist. 1, Shelbyville P.O. - no Marion's listed. In one of the marriages below for AJ to Sarah, did you notice M. Anderson as security?? Don't know about "Baucom" - sounds like it could've been an accomplice.??? > [Original Message] > From: Hall, Lisa <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 6/16/2005 5:53:55 AM > Subject: RE: [TNBEDFOR] AJ Anderson > > I think I remember reading - in the newspaper article about his arrest > and escape - that Marion Anderson, son of A.J. I think I remember reading - in the newspaper article about his arrest and escape - that Marion Anderson, son of A.J. Anderson (the one I am looking for) was trying to reach Baucom during his escape. That may be his home. What county is that in? Perhaps that is where A.J. and Eliza originated. What year was it that the deed book mentioned AJ married to E.E. Anderson? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2005 4:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TNBEDFOR] AJ Anderson This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. They did not have a son named A. J. Anderson. Is it possible all the records are for the same person, who had two different wives? Good luck in your search-- Carolyn
