    1. Re: In Regards to Early Hall Families of BCT
    2. Steve Carson
    3. As Pat Munroe pointed out in her recent posting to the Bedford TN list, both Fergus Hall and some other Halls in early Bedford County both arrived from Sumner County around 1812 or 1813. These other Halls include the James and David Hall who acquired land from Ezekiel Billington in this deed: Bedford County TN Deeds, Book E, page 262 Ezekiel Billington to John and David Hall, 30 December 1813; Ezekiel Billington of BCT to John and David Hall of Sumner County TN; $400 for "...a certain tract or parcel of land containing 238 acres be the same more or less in Bedford County on the north side of Duck R. being part of a 1500 acre tract granted to George Davidson. Beginning at John Warner's northeast corner dogwood and runs north 164 poles to an elm and chinquapin oak thence west 260 poles to a stake in mulberry thence south 130 [poles] to a Hickory thence east 135 poles to a mulberry thence south 34 poles to a black gum, John Warner's northwest corner, thence east to the beginning..."; witness: James Billington, Absolom Fry The land in the above deed would today be in Marshall County but was then in Bedford County. The location of the 1500 acre tract granted to George Davidson was just W of Spring Creek and can be seen on this map: http://www.tngenweb.org/marshall/maps/landgrantmap2.html Other deeds and surveys that I posted a few weeks ago to the Bedford TN list describe other Hall and Billington tracts all near Spring Creek and N of Duck River. The deed that associates Fergus Hall with Sumner County is this one: Bedford County TN Deeds, Book D, Page 334 Fergus Hall to Patton & Erwin, 14 December 1812; Patton & Erwin of Buncombe, NC to Fergus Hall of Sumner, TN; $800 for 450 acres on the S fork of Duck River, part of grant #223 [in the Three Forks area]; no abutters listed; witness: H. Grove, John Ewell Maybe someone on the list knows more about where this land of Fergus Hall was located. I do know that Grant 223's NW corner was just across from the mouth of the Wartrace Fork, where it enters the Garrison Fork (called the Middle Fork in early surveys). Grant 223 was roughly 2.8 miles square with its sides running roughly in the cardinal directions (N, S, E, and W) and it went far enough South to cross Thompson's Creek (twice) and far enough East so that its Southern boundary crossed Shipman's Creek. Unfortunately the deed in Book D, Page 334 offers few clues to the actual location of the land other than it was "on the South Fork of Duck River. Considering the area included in Grant #223, this places the land somewhere from about 3/4 miles downstream of where the Garrison Fork enters Duck River to somewhere between where Russell Branch and Doddy Creek join Duck River.

    3. Carolyn, thank you for this food for thought, I'm not very familiar with these surnames in connection with my Hall's but there is a great deal that I don't know about them so I will keep all of this in mind while I am searching, after all Fergus Hall was living not so far away from your Stephenson's in the 1840 Bedford Co. Tn. census as was a Jesse and a James Hall, there must be connection between these Hall's. but I can only guess at this point in time. 2. Carolyn Smotherman
    3. For some time I have been studying a Stephenson family which lived in the vicinity of Beech Grove. James Stephenson (abt 1776-1833) married Sarah Hall (abt 1776-1843), daughter of John Hall in Garrard Co, KY, Sep 10, 1798. Sarah Stevenson is on the 1840 census of Bedford County, page 2. Her neighbors include Jacob Sick, William B. Gibson, James McMahan, (Sarah), Alexander Lee, James Robertson, and George Gill. Their son, Robert R. "Stevens" is on the 1840 census, page 4, next neighbor to James Hall and Jesse Hall. Other neighbors of Robert are Jesse Shelton, Hugh T. Montgomery, and Mary Sick. I have wondered about James and Jesse Hall, suspected they were also from the family of John Hall of Garrard Co, KY, but have failed to definitely identify them. Car

    2. pamunroe
    3. Im interested in making contact with anyone that might be researching these Hall and related families of early Bedford Co. Tn. that were mentioned in Steve Carsons July 24, 2005 posts in regards to early Surveys and Land Deeds for Hall's in the area of Caney Spring Creek in Bedford Co. Tenn. Some of the first Land records for these Hall's in Bedford Co. was the Dec. 1813 Deed from Ezekiel Billington of Bedford Co. to David and James Hall of Sumner Co. Tn. for 238 Acres on the North side of Duck River. Dec. 1812 - D - 334 - Patton & Erwin of Buncombe, N.C. to Fergus Hall of Sumner Co. Tenn. 450 acres on the South Fork of Duck River. It is appearent from these two deeds that there may have been a connection between these three Hall's, sense they had all been in Sumner Co. Tn. before arriving in Bedford Co. There are several other surnames in Bedford Co. that were associated with the Hall's that were also found on early Sumner Co. Tax records, James Bruce family, Mathew Alexander family, the Reed family, Crawfords, Peter Lemmons, Alsup's, McCarty's, etc I would love to know what the connection is, if anyone out there has any ideas please do share your thoughts with me on this, and any other issue concerning the Hall's and related surnames of early Bedford Co. Tenn. Pat

    1. GRANT, GLOVER surnames
    2. Allen Grant
    3. This is a periodic search for anyone who might be related to my gggrandfather, Thomas Grant. Thomas Grant was born about 1778 and died in 1836 in Marshall County, TN. His year of birth was derived from a Marshall County court deposition taken in July, 1838, wherein his age was listed as "60," though it could be in error. Thomas married Sarah Glover, sister of Christina Glover, who married James Davis. They had a number of children: Howard b. abt. 1802 John b. abt. 1805 m. Martha Shannon January 1, 1838 Richard G. b. Feb. 22, 1808 m. Adaline Caroline Fowler abt. 1829 Mary Margaret b. abt. 1810 m. David R. Looney Levinia b. abt. 1814 m. Early Reasonover Jan. 1835 James Davis (my ggrandfather) b. Jan. 6, 1818 m. Sarah Elizabeth Talley Jul. 14, 1840. After her death, m. Tennie Caroline Talley Jan. 6, 1869 Mary "Mollie" Virginia b. Jan. 27, 1857 m. John M McMillian Jan 27, 1875 Minnesota "Minnie" Talley b. bet. 1859-1860 m. Patrick Taylor Calvert Dec. 22, 1874 Victoria b. Jun. 2, 1862 Steven D. b. Dec. 20, 1864 There have been several stories passed down through time regarding the early life of my Thomas Grant, none of which I can confirm. Perhaps, one of them is true. Because several brothers and parts of the country are mentioned, there may be some other Grant lineages around that may be connected to Thomas Grant. Here is what I have been told by family members: According to information handed down by Talley Grant of Franklin, TX (date unknown), Thomas and two brothers came directly from Scotland. One brother apparently settled in Maine, one in Pennsylvania and the remaining brother moved to Ohio. According to the story, Thomas ended up in Kentucky, possibly as the result of being orphaned and indentured to a farmer to learn the farming trade. Another story circulating through the family is that the three brothers fled Scotland when England took over the lands and took everything the Scots owned, leaving them with only pieces of land to live on. Their traditions and clothing attire were considered treason by the British and the Scots could be thrown in prison for such displays. As a result of the oppression, many Scots fled their country for America. Because they were virtually poor at that point, they indentured themselves for seven years to other families to gain passage to America. Thomas and his brothers were believed to have been indentured. They may have arrived on the Carolina Coast and migrated west, however, most suggest that those coming from Scotland landed around the Upper East Coast. We know that he later moved to Tennessee and settled in Maury County. Recently, I have located some other Thomas Grant's who were in the Revolutionary War and enlisted in 1776 in Massachusetts. One served with his father, Thomas Grant, in his father's Company and John Glover's Regiment. He was married to Lydia Stacy and they lived in Marbleshead, Essex County, MA. Another Thomas Grant, from Noblesborough, Lincoln County, MA, enlisted in 1775 in John Glover, Jr's Company and John Glover (Sr.)'s Regiment. The age of these Grant's make them prime candidates as parents of my Thomas Grant; however, it is only a chance. I have no evidence to suggest the relationship, but am seeking anyone who can confirm or dispute it. I have been participating in a DNA study through FamilyTreeDNA.com, wherein we now have 53 Grant's in the project. We have several matches in the group and I match closely with three of them. The lineage of the other participants is most interesting, however, we have yet to find the common link. I am at a distinct disadvantage in that I can only go back to the 5th generation, while others go back much further. If you have run into a brickwall and can not find any new information about your lineage, and are a male Grant, you might want to consider participation in the Grant DNA study. Who knows, we may be related! Allen Grant <'\\\>< http://home.houston.rr.com/agrant/genealogy/granthis.htm

    3. There is a William Ferguson on the 1812 tax list who is not on the 1820 census. He is in James Yell's company, which places him in the NE quadrant of the county. I cannot recognize Mary Ferguson's neighbors in the 1820 census to tell where she is and besides the 1820 census is notoriously out of geographical order, so those listed before and after her might not be her neighbors at all. Please tell me where I can see a copy of the petition you mentioned. Some of those in Yell's company are known to have lived right on the Rutherford County border.
