Thank you for your thoughts. I am certain his work will help me, and I am delighted to find this resource.
OK, I goofed and hit the send button too early last time - sorry. Joel and Charity DeShields left North Carolina in about 1815 and came to Tennessee. His family appears on the 1830 census in Bedford County Tennessee and in 1840 they lived in Coffee County. In 1850 he was in Grundy County and his daughter Mary lived with him. Chairty was living with Cyrus Josiah DeShields and his wife, Jane. In 1850 they lived in Civil District #8 and lived between Wagonner & Smith. They appeared in the Agricultural Census. In 1860 & 1870, both Joel and Charity were gone and Josiah and Jane had moved back to Beech Grove, Coffee County, Tn. In 1880, they were living in Montgomery County, Tennessee in District One and their older children were living with them. Jane was an invalid. Would like to know the maiden name of Charity and also Jane. Charity and Joel were probably married in North Carolina. Cyrus Josiah and Jane were probably married in Coffee County, Tn about 1840-41. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Reta Parton
Hi Laurie, Sorry, but marriage records before 1861 were destroyed in the Court House fire of 1863. To [email protected]: You have a couple of choices for getting records from the Bedford County, Tennessee, County Court Minute Book, Volume 1, 1848-1852 (there are other volumes available. I don't think they are all indexed yet): 1. You can go to the Tennessee State Library & Archives and locate the microfilm of these records; or 2. You can buy the CD from Steve Carson which contains the images. I own a complete set of the images he has done, and they are wonderful. His webpage address is (for these products): http://www.gscassociates.com/recordproducts.html You can also contact him via email: [email protected] Does this help? > To [email protected]: I agree with Lucy about Steve Carson's CD's they have been a valuable tool for me in my research of Bedford County, I refer to them over and over agian . Because of these CD's I have finally began to crash through my 30 year old brick wall, where before I had almost given up all hope. Steve has been a big help to me in my project of sorting out some of the families of early Bedford County Tenn, as his roots also grow very deep in Bedford County, as can be seen by all of the time and effort he has spent in listing a great deal of data on the Bedford County Tennessee USGENWEB site, for the use of all of us researchers, this was I believe a true labor of love for him . Excel literacy is not my strong suit, but will you please forward a copy of your Index to the Shelbyville Times-Gazette. It is titled: A Pictorial History of Bedford County, Shelbyville, Tennessee. As the title reflects, the book contains some great photographs, from as early as 1833 (I have doubts about this date as I believe photography was not invented until sometime in the 1840s) through current-day. Sadly, the book was not indexed and there are LOTS of family names. Since, I felt like I kept going over and over the same territory, I decided to index the publication.
