Clinton Courier Aug. 5, 1954 Father, Son Slain, Second Son Wounded By Lake City Constable Making Arrest Officer Charged On Three Warrants: Says Trio Kicked And Beat Him Clyde Tadlock, constable for the Town of Lake City, is being held at the county jail this week on two warrants charging murder and one charging felonious assault in connection with the double slaying of a father and son and the critical wounding of a second son, last Saturday about 10 p.m. in Lake City. Mrs. Edna Ayers swore out the warrants after her father, Steve Sharpe, 55, and Barton Sharpe 30, were shot and killed instantly. In critical condition is Jimmy Sharpe, 25, who was shot once in the chest close to the heart. No date for a preliminary hearing has yet been set. Tadlock, Who Was elected constable in August 1952, by a one vote margin over Wade Cantrell, is an Anderson County school bus driver and former taxicab driver at Lake City. He is a candidate for re-election in the Aug. 5 election. County officers and Lake City police investigated and Assistant Attorney General Walter Fischer who was on the scene shortly after the slaying, said that as a result of his as yet incomplete investigation it appeared that Tadlock shot the three men after he was attacked by them. Fischer said he had learned that the three men were standing on the sidewalk in Lake City outside a beer establishment known Padgett's Place and that Tadlock was sitting across the street in his car. Barton Sharpe became involved in an argument with an unidentified woman and took her by the arm, trying to lead her away. Tadlock Crossed the street and attempted to arrest Barton Sharpe, and Sharpe cursed him and turned away. Tadlock followed him a few steps where the elder Sharpe and Jimmy Sharpe were standing" Apparently they jump him (Tadlock) then." Fischer said. He said reports from witnesses who have been questioned indicate that the three men had the constable down on the sidewalk and were kicking and beating him about the face and body when Tadlock went for his gun and started shooting. Each of the Victims was apparently shot only once although one of the bullets ranged through the body of one of the men and struck his left arm. Several witness who did not see the shouting were near enough to hear Tadlock yell several times for help, Fischer said, although he added that he only one witness to the whole series of events. He declined to name the witness. The Attorney General also said early this week he had information that there may have been a fourth man involved who ran when the shooting started. Tadlock displayed numerous cuts and bruises which he sustained fighting off the men before he ? shot them. He had with him in the cell the clothes which he was wearing when the fight occured and he displayed a ? and bloody under clothes which he was wearing at the time. At least one large rent was apparent in the shirt which he indicated had been made by a knife in the hands of one of the men, although he declined to talk about the shooting Monday. He also displayed a livid bruise on one thigh and numerous other cuts and bruises. The Lake City constable has a reputation as an expert shot with a pistol. The two Sharpe sons arrived in Lake City on vacation from their jobs in Detroit, Mich., only the day before the slaying occurred.
