July 22,1916 Tragedy In Tenth Melton Patterson Killed And Eb Brown Dangerously Wounded Hot Words And Whisky Cause Of Shooting A terrible tragedy was enacted Saturday evening at the home of Melton Patterson,residing on Ligas Fork, in the Tenth district of Anderson County,resulting in the instant death of Patterson and dangerous wounding Eb Brown.The cause of the tragedy is said to be whisky and hot blood. Briefly the facts are as follows.Eb Brown,aged 23 years,and an elder brother had gone to the Patterson home and were invited to supper.The elder Brown went into the house,while the young man remained outside near a fence.Patterson grew angry from some reason,and arming himself went outside and opened a quarrell with Brown.Hot words and the lie passed,when Patterson shot Brown in the right side the ball passing clear through the body and making a dangerous,though not a fatal wound.Brown thereupon shot Patterson through the neck. almost seveiling the head killing him instantly.Patterson was about 50 years of age and leaves a wife and six children.Brown is in a Knoxville hospital,and doctors say that chances are good for his recovery.This makes the third killing in the Tenth district a month.
