Clinton Courier Oct. 9, 1975 Lake City Republican Leader Dies A former Anderson County tax assessor and prominent Republican fiqure , Dewey A. Weaver, 77, died Monday at Oak Ridge Hospital after a long illness with a lung condition. His health first failed about eight years ago and he was forced to retire from public life. His condition had worsened over the past two years and he had been hospitalized intermittently during that time, returning to the hospital the day before he died. Weaver was elected tax assessor in 1943, serving until 1947, and later finished out three year of the term of William R. (Bill) Hicks. He ran as the Republican nominee for county judge in 1950. He was a native, and life-long resident of Lake City, residing on Sixth St. Beside serving as a public official, he enjoyed a variety of careers including farmer, merchant, real estate agent and lumber mill operator. He operated the Riverview Lumber Co. in Clinton for 15 years, selling the business when he retired in 1967. He was a veteran of World War I serving with the Army toward the end of the war without going overseas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake City and the Masons. Weaver and his wife, Mrs. Edith Pemberton Weaver, observed their 50th wedding anniversary in August. Beside his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Thomas R. (Dorothy) Steele of Lake City and Mrs. Raymond (Carolyn) Chambers of Oak Ridge, three grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Grace Pemberton of Lake City, and a brother, Carl Weaver of Lake City. Graveside services, conducted by Rev. Ron Clay will be Thursday (today) at 2 p.m at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton.
