Born July 27, 1918 in Oliver Springs, he was the son of John Marvin and Elsie Chloe Bailey Bass. Bill was a faithful member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and had pastored several area churches , including Smokey Junction Baptist, Riverview Baptist, Graves Gap Baptist, Armes Chapel Baptist, Mill Creek Baptist, White Oak Chapel Baptist, Community Baptist Church, and many others throughout the years. He was also a member of the Omega Masonic Lodge No 536 F&AM and served the lodge as chaplain for many years. He was a US Army veteran who served his country during World War II. He received various citations, including two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained December 1944 in Belgium during wartime activity. Bill was also an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan who loved watching the games, especially when the team would win.
