Clinton Courier Oct.9, 1975 Youth's Car Overturns One Killed, three uninjured In Wreck A Clinton Senior High School student was killed last Wednesday night, Oct.1, when his car overturned on Sulphur Springs Rd. near Clinton Coal Yard. Gilbert Dewey Daugherty, 16, apparently died of head injuries. Anderson County Ambulance Service said. It appeared the youth was thrown into the windshield, although his body remained in the car after the impact, State Trooper David A. King said. The accident occurred about 10:15 p.m. Three passengers in the car, a 1970 Ford, were not injured. They were Clois Roysden, 18 of South Clinton, Mike Jernigan, 17, and David Jernigan 16 brothers, of Clinton Rt.3. Daugherty made his home with his mother, Hassie Daugherty, at Shady Grove Trailer Park on Laurel Rd., Clinton Rt.3. He was a junior at CSHS and was employed through the Neighborhood Youth Corps. Trooper King reported that the youths were traveling west on Sulphur Springs Rd. 1, 000 feet west of Skyline Drive, on a curve, when Daugherty, lost control of the car. The road was slick from rain, the officer noted. The car left the road on the south side and overturned. The car , owned by the victim's mother, was demolished. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home, Oliver Springs, with the Rev. Dana Ward officiating. Burial was in Anderson Memorial Gardens. Besides his mother, Daugherty leaves three brothers, Noah and Kenneth Daugherty of Clinton Rt.3 and Patton Daugherty of Devonia Rt.1, four sisters, Mrs. Emily Packett of Clinton Rt. 3, Mary and Janet Daugherty of the home, and Phyllis Byrge of Clinton.
