Notes for Walter Elgin (Ake) McCarty: Clinton Courier News - Sep 5, 2001 - Photograph accompanies obituary Elgin "Ake" Walter McCarty, 81, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Sept 4, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr McCarty was born Sept 3, 1920 in Anderson County, the son of Floyd and Julia Elizabeth Lyke McCarty. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. During the war he served with the 4110th division from Nov 7, 1942, to Oct 19, 1945, in the European Theater. He had worked at General Electric in Evendale, Ohio until retiring in 1977. Mr McCarty later worked as a sheet metal fabricator at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, where he was known to his friends as "Mac." He retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1985. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Clinton. His family described him as a wonderful husband and a friend to all he came in contact with. Mr McCarty is survived by his wife of 47 years; Eva Marie Wells McCarty; three brothers, Kenneth E McCarty and his wife, Sharon, of Clinton, James B McCarty and his wife, Marie, of Parkville, MO, and Estel L McCarty and his wife, Mary, of New Orleans, LA; two sisters-in-law, Ruth McCarty of Clinton and Estella Miller of Corryton; a brother-in-law, Earl D Wells and his wife, Shirley, of Claxton; and several nieces and nephews, including two nephews he considered special; Jeffrey Wells of Clinton and Steve Wells of Hamilton, Ohio. Don Pearman of Montezuma, IN, was considered a special friend. In addition to his parents, Mr McCarty was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters; Woodrow McCarty, Ivon McCarty, Garver McCarty, Marie Hall, Thelma Lee McCarty, and Clarissa Geneva Hashbarger. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 AM Friday, Sept 7, at Hillvale Baptist Church Cemetery in Clinton. Mr McCarty's nephew, the Rev Darrell Miller, will officiate, and members of the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military rites. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday, Sept 6, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
