Anderson County News Aug. 27, 1932 To New River Duellists Die Differing Versions Of Fight Leave Sheriff Baffled New River, in this county near the Scott county line, has two widows and four orphan children as a result of the Lowe-Hensley pistol duel Thursday night. Wayne Hensley, shot through the abdomen and stomach died in Howard-Henderson hospital, Knoxville at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. His brother-in-law, Cordice Lowe with whom he grappled and fought over a high embankment, died at General Hospital, Knoxville, Friday morning. IN the meanwhile New River is hearing many versions of the bitter fight, Sheriff Cleve Daugherty said Saturday there were so many that he never expected to get the straight of it. Daugherty said the investigation possibly would result in the arrest of the wife of one of the slain men. "However", said Daugherty,"the relatives will take the warrant, I'm not going to do it". This much toward explaining the fight is agreed upon: Mrs. Wayne Hensley left her husband at home, went to the home of John Lowe, father of Cordie Lowe, and where her mother was visiting. Hensley went to bring his wife home, A quarrel followed. Cordie Lowe and Hensley, his brother-in-law grappled and rolled over a bank. One version has it that the two men shot each other as the grappled and rolled into the highway. Another version is that the wife grabbled a pistol, and in shooting her husband's autagonist, accidentally shot her own husband. Bodies of both men were back in New River Saturday.
