Burial was in Clinch River Cemetery in the Medford community. Mrs Pierce died Monday at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She had been ill since June and had resided in Anderson Health Care Center before entering the hospital. She had lived in Clinton for most of her life and at 813 McAdoo Street the past four years. Mrs Pierce had worked in several Clinton restaurants, including the Macres Cafe on Market Street, and retired about 20 years ago. She was a member of North Clinton Baptist Church. Her husband; Fred Pierce, died in 1985. Her first husband; Virgil Golden, died in 1960. Two brothers; John and Sawyer Scarbrough; and two sisters, Lou Thomas and Mamie Bailey, preceded her is death. Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Charles E and Essie Golden; a brother and sister in law, Earl and Helen Scarbrough of Clinton; five grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing, picnics, and train trips. She will be remembered as a very caring person and for her wit and sense of humor. She was a former knitter for Magnet Hosiery Mills and was a wonderful mother. Preceded in death by first husband; Marshal Maples Sr; second husband, Sawyer Scarbrough; sons, Austin (Easy) Maples and John Scarbrough; parents, Samuel and Laura Brummet Huckaby; siblings and their spouses. Survivors: daughter: Kathy Bell and husband, Paul of Powell; sons, Dorman Scarbrough of Andersonville, Marshal (M L) Maples and Kenneth Maples of Knoxville; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and step grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; brother in law, Earl Scarbrough and wife, Helen of Clinton. The family will receive friends 1-2 PM Thursday, Jul 31, 2003 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with funeral service following at 2 PM in the chapel with Chaplain Clay Mulford officiating.
