Clinton Courier May 21, 1987 Rev. Smith Of Longfield Dies At 72 A Baptist minister who was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, Rev. Vernie L. Smith Sr. 72, of Longfield Rd, near Lake City, died Tuesday morning at his home. Smith retired from Union Carbide Corp. in Oak Ridge. His is survived by his wife, Claude Elizabeth Wilson Smith, three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Anna Lou) Ayres, Mrs. Bruce (Mickey) Reed and Mrs. Bob (Boots) Tucker, two sons, Vernie L. Smith Jr., and Thomas A. Smith, four grandchildren, a great-grandchild, mother, Mrs. Lula Smith, all of Lake City, and two sisters, Mrs. Opal Owens of Lake City and Mrs. Dinah Shoupe of Holland,Ind. The funeral was held Wednesday at Cox Funeral Home with the Rev.H.L. Smith officiating. Burial is to be at 11 a.m. Thursday (today0 at Oak Grove Cemetery.
