From The Oak Ridger 9 Feb 2005 Stanley Robinson Ashton, 88, a resident of Gatlinburg, formerly of Clinton, Mildred Ruffner Brown, 89, of Oliver Springs, and a former resident of the Coalfield community, Rebecca Jane Cross Patterson, 65, Eddie Owens, 42, of Heiskell, Stanley Robinson Ashton, 88, a resident of Gatlinburg, formerly of Clinton, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborne Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born the youngest of four children in New Bedford, Mass. Mr. Ashton worked for 25 years for Union Carbide Nuclear Division in Oak Ridge. He and his first wife, Barbara, taught the original Arthur Murray style of dance in Oak Ridge in the late 1940s. He was manager of the Oak Ridge Municipal Pool in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He unselfishly gave 40 years of volunteer work to the American Red Cross in Oak Ridge . From age 12 to 75, Mr. Ashton won hundreds of medals and awards at swim meets. He held the record for the fastest 50-meter swim at the University of Tennessee for many years. The plaque recognizing his acceptance into the Tennessee Swimming Hall of Fame hangs at the University of Tennessee Aquatic Center today. Known for his kindness and ability to make friends, Stan will be missed by thousands of people who have come to know him as a friend. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Barbara Allen Ashton. He is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle Milligan Ashton, and her wonderful family, including sons, Gary Ashton, Ken Ashton and Stanley (Lee) Ashton; and the entire extended family including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Trinity Episcopal Church on Airport Road in Gatlinburg. The family requests that, rather than flowers or other gifts, memorials be in the form of donations in memory of Stanley R. Ashton, to the American Red Cross, 908 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. He will be remembered for his shining life and missed as a devoted father and husband. Mildred Ruffner Brown, 89, of Oliver Springs, and a former resident of the Coalfield community, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee in Knoxville, from complications of pneumonia. She was born April 8, 1915, in Harriman. Mrs. Brown was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She had previously worked at Coalfield School in the cafeteria and later at One Hour Martinizing in Oak Ridge and Clinton. In addition to her parents, Charles F. and Bessie E. Manning Hampton, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl H. Ruffner; her second husband, Raymond E. Brown; one son, Thomas E. Ruffner; and two brothers and one sister, Rev. Frank Hampton, Russell C. Hampton, and Cordie Beason. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Morrow and husband, Dwight, of Clinton; her son, Randy Ruffner and wife, Nancy, of Mt. Juliet; her daughter-in-law, Ida V. Ruffner of Oliver Springs; eight grandchildren, Lindsey Morrow, Gina Ruffner, Deana R. Hudson, Dwight Thomas Clark, Rev. Mickey Clark, Randy R. Ruffner, Ricky Ruffner and Missy R. McBee; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Molee Ruffner Fezzie and husband, Frank, of Kingsport, and Geraldine D. Hampton of Harriman. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and extended family members, and a host of special friends, including Mrs. Burley Jenkins of Oliver Springs. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs, with the Rev. Garvan Walls, the Rev. Keith Price and the Rev. Mickey Clark officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at the Davis Cemetery in Coalfield. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rebecca Jane Cross Patterson, 65, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Baptist West Hospital in Knoxville. Born July 15, 1939, in Bonny Blue, Va., she was the daughter of Helen Irene Cross and Stanley Watson Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom T. Patterson, and a daughter, Deborah Jane Patterson. Mrs. Patterson is survived by her daughters, Teri Hagan and husband, Bob, and Candy Pung and husband, Mike; sons, Bryan Patterson and Dale Patterson; five grandchildren, Bryan Patterson, Jr., Thomas Hagan, Cameron Patterson, Jake Patterson and Ian Pung; and by two sisters and a brother, Tommie Smith, Jerrie Mitchell and Charles Cross. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Rev. Don Long officiating. The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to the Arthritis Club of Anderson County, Smoky Mountain Branch of Arthritis Foundation, in care of Maxine Vaden, 982 West Outer Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
