Horace V. Wells Jr., journalist, crusader CLINTON, Tenn — Horace V Wells Jr., a journalist and publisher who received national honors for his crusade against segregation, died Thursday. He was 87 Wells, publisher of the Clinton Courier-News for more than 50 years, became known nationally in 1956 for his support of school integration. He took up the unpopular cause after Clinton High School became the first public school in the South ordered by a federal court to integrate black and white students, a move that sparked violence in the East Tennessee town.
