He was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Detroit, Mich., to parents William L. and Mildred Knight Briggs. A loving husband and father, he first came to Oak Ridge in 1943 and worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory, as well as the Atomic Energy Commission reactor licensing agency, until his retirement in 1975. For the last decade, he enjoyed working as an "Our Favorite Carpenter" with Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County. Mr. Briggs is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edna H. Briggs; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Diane Briggs of Chattanooga; his daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and John Stinson of Crossville, and Carolyn and Steven Johnson of Pearl, Miss.; his grandchildren, Laura Hibbs and Scott Briggs of Chattanooga, Doug Stinson of Denver, Colo., and Greg Stinson of Charlotte, N.C., Peter Johnson of Pearl, Miss., and Jeremy Mitchell of Columbia, Miss. Lois Sills Clapie, 92, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. She was born Aug. 8, 1912, and lived in Oak Ridge from 1947 until 2003, when she moved to assisted living in Florida. Mrs. Clapie was an active bowler and participated in many activities at the Oak Ridge Senior Center on a regular basis. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and West Village Christian Church. She was employed with the security department of the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, K-25 until her retirement in 1962. She was the widow of Carl Clapie, who was very active in the Masonic Lodge until his death in 1987. Mrs. Clapie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Roger Ward; her son, Carl Sills; her granddaughter, Cheryl Ward; her grandson, Dennis Sills; her brother, Ralph McCuistion; her step-son, Richard Clapie; six step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. The Rev. Don Bullock, retired minister at West Village Christian Church, will officiate. Charles Jennings, 80, of Clinton, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. He was born July 15, 1924, and was a member of Mt. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva McDavid Jennings; first wife, Ruth ennings; and brothers, Kenneth, Clarence, Bob, and Dempsey. Delores Jean Lewis, 66, of Oak Ridge, went to be with the Lord her Savior on Feb. 5, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Lewis was born on Feb. 14, 1938, in Lancaster, Ky., to parents Walter and Vivian Marie Gooch Mitchell. She had worked as bookkeeper with Lewis Electric and was a homemaker and devoted grandmother. She was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church in Oak Ridge for 40 years. Among her hobbies of fishing, boating, and camping with her children and grandchildren, she enjoyed traveling and meeting people. She and her husband, Don, and their two children moved to Oak Ridge in 1944 from Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Mance taught organ and piano for 50 years and was also a licensed public accountant who worked with her husband in their business. She was a charter member of the Toastmasters Club, a charter member and past president of the Pilot Club of Oak Ridge, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 390, and president of Business and Professional Women. She also was a member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, coming from First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. She had been a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at the NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Mance is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Barbara of Arlington, Texas; and her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Scroggs of Bixby, Okla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rick Mance, David Mance and Jackie Nielen, Dale Keck and Jim Keck, of Knoxville; her great-grandchildren, Jennifer Mance, Jessica Mance, Aaron Mance and Ryan Mance, and David Bay and Kimberly of Arlington, Texas, and Jessica Keck and Allen Hall of Knoxville; and many great-great-grandchildren.
