    2. From The Oak ridger 11 Feb 2005 Dr. John Logan Emlet, 64, of Manila, Ark., Charles D. Griffies, 71, of Scaly Mountain, N.C., Dr. John Logan Emlet, 64, of Manila, Ark., died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Manila. Born Feb. 20, 1940, Dr. Emlet was the son of Logan and Helen Emlet, formerly of Oak Ridge. He attended both undergraduate and medical school at Duke University, graduating with honors in 1965. After an internship at Duke University Medical Center and a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, he completed his residency at Charity Hospital, Tulane University in New Orleans, La. Dr. Emlet went into a general surgery practice at West Florida Hospital in 1972 and enjoyed the respect of his peers, serving as chief of surgery for several years. His patients often expressed their admiration of his exceptional concern for their welfare and comfort. He retired from practice in 1997. An avid sailor, he was a member of the Pensacola Yacht Club and raced competitively. In addition to sailing, he enjoyed following Duke basketball and spending time with his family. Dr. Emlet is survived by his wife, Deborah "Sam" Emlet; two children, Mandy Emlet Bills of Pensacola and James Logan Emlet of Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren, Spencer Todd Bills and Avery Logan Bills, both of Pensacola; and a sister, Susan E. Crandall of San Jose, Calif. Charles D. Griffies, 71, of Scaly Mountain, N.C., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005.
