From the Oak ridsger 4 Feb 2005 Emma Robinette Cate, 93, of Clinton, Lois Sills Clapie, 92, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, William Edward Cooper, 78, of Kingston, Edward Kelly "Ed" Foust Jr., 91, of Lake City, Comer Cleevis Hall, 78, a resident of Nashville and formerly of Oak Ridge, Dorothy Dickenson Mance, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Oak Ridge, Barbara Duggins Shelton, 76, of Norris, Edward "Ed" Stair Sr., 78, of Clinton, Emma Robinette Cate, 93, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at her daughter's home. Born April 25, 1911, in Scott County, Va., she was the daughter of Robert H. and Maggie Davis Robinette. She grew up in the Bradbury community of Roane County, where her family farmed and were active members of that farming community. Her parents moved their family of six children from Virginia to Roane County in 1914. Her father and his brother moved their possessions with horses and wagons. The trip took four days. Her mother and the six children came by train to their new home, a log house by the creek near the ridge. She attended Bradbury and Wheat Schools and played basketball for Roane County High School. After marriage to John R. Cate, captain of the Roane County High School football and basketball teams, they moved to Pontiac, Mich. Mrs. Cate was always generous in sharing their home with friends from Tennessee who went to Michigan seeking jobs. They shared the Cate family hospitality, her excellent cooking, and the bounty from the vegetable and flower gardens. Though always a homemaker, she was quite an entrepreneur, having bought and supervised the renovation of several houses. Her membership in Columbia Avenue Baptist Church in Pontiac was important to her, and she was very active in church life. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her sisters, Eva, Georgia and Oleta, and a brother Garvin. She is survived by her sister, Grace, of Kingsport. Mrs. Cate is also survived by her daughters, Joan of Clinton, Mary of Clarkston, Mich., grandsons, Scott Milner and wife, Natalie, of Somerville, N.J., Todd Milner and wife, Kimberly, of Edwards, Colo., and Benn Weiner of Clarkston; and her great-grandchildren, Eliza and Claire Milner of Oak Ridge, Lauren Milner of Edwards, Colo., and Katherine Milner of Somerville, N.J. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2005, ay Bradbury United Methodist Church. Lois Sills Clapie, 92, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2005, in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. She was born Aug. 8, 1912, and lived in Oak Ridge from 1947 until 2003, when she moved to assisted living in Florida. Mrs. Clapie was an active bowler and participated in many activities at the Oak Ridge Senior Center on a regular basis. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and West Village Christian Church. She was employed with the security department of the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, K-25, until her retirement in 1962. She was the widow of Carl Clapie, who was very active in the Masonic Lodge until his death in 1987. Mrs. Clapie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Roger Ward; her son, Carl Sills; her granddaughter, Cheryl Ward; her grandson, Dennis Sills; her brother, Ralph McCuistion; her stepson, Richard Clapie; six step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. The Rev. Don Bullock, retired minister at West Village Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. William Edward Cooper, 78, of Kingston, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at his home. He was a former treasurer and Sunday school teacher at Central Baptist Church and a deacon for 40 years. A retired accountant, he retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in Oak Ridge after 38 years of service. After retirement, he and Betty, his beloved wife of 56 years, enjoyed raveling, camping and trout fishing. Known for his gracious smile, he was dedicated to his work for the Lord and love for his family. In addition to his wife, Mr. Cooper is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ernest Fiebelkorn of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Linda and Tony Gregg of Oak Ridge; four sisters, Betty McHenry, Lydia Davis and Bonnie Lowe, all of LaFollette, and Alice Lowe of Soddy Daisy; two grandchildren, Barton and Cameron Gregg; two step-grandchildren, Paul and Mark Fiebelkorn; and two step-great-grandchildren, Gabi and Trey Fiebelkorn. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home in Kingston with the Rev. Mark Umbehagen, the Rev. Herschel Chevellier and the Rev. Walt Isley officiating. Edward Kelly "Ed" Foust Jr., 91, of Lake City, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the Life Care Center of Morgan County. Born Aug. 30, 1913, in Knox County, he was the son of Edward K. Foust Sr. and Minnie Bowman Foust. Mr. Foust retired from Rust Engineering in 1986. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lake City, and had been an active member of the Lake City Lions Club for several years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Jenkins, a granddaughter, Jill Jenkins, and a sister and brother, Eddie Hyder and Walter Foust. Mr. Foust is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Foust of Lake City; two daughters, Diane Schimmel and husband, Danny, of Gallatin, and Belinda Dunham and husband, Roger, of Idaho; a stepdaughter, Becky Needham and husband, Roger, of Powell; a son, Kelly Foust of Washington; and a stepson, Barry Luallen and wife, Neda, of Clinton. He is also survived by his sisters, Eloise Lopstitich of Oregon, Helen Foust of Reno, Nev., and Marie Ammerine of Clinton; his brothers, Robert E. Foust of Lake City and Warren Foust of Harriman; and by eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Comer Cleevis Hall, 78, a resident of Nashville and formerly of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. A native of the Big Bottom community in Jackson County, he was born Jan. 9, 1927, to Abou C. Hall and Nannie Lou Rogers Hall. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had worked as a nuclear physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jim and Ellie Hall and Bedford and Sally Rogers. Mr. Hall is survived by eight cousins, Bruce Crabtree, James Rogers, Muriel Rogers Jarvis, Odazell Rogers Lynn, Jackie Rogers Bumbalough, Mary Helen Rogers Cherry, Betty Rogers and Louise Hall Rudolph; and a special cousin and caregiver, Patricia Ruck along with other family members and numerous friends, including the staff of Richland Place Health Center. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery in the Stone community of Jackson County. The Rev. Earl Brazle Jr. will officiate. Dorothy Dickenson Mance, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Oak Ridge, died Feb. 3, 2005. She and her husband, Don, and their two children moved to Oak Ridge in 1944 from Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Mance taught organ and piano for 50 years and was also a licensed public accountant who worked with her husband in their business. She was a charter member of the Toastmasters Club, a charter member and past president of the Pilot Club of Oak Ridge, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 390, and president of Business and Professional Women. She also was a member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, coming from First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. She had been a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at the NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Mance is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Barbara of Arlington, Texas; and her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Scroggs of Bixby, Okla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rick Mance, David Mance and Jackie Nielen, Dale Keck and Jim Keck, of Knoxville; her great-grandchildren, Jennifer Mance, Jessica Mance, Aaron Mance and Ryan Mance, and David Bay and Kimberly of Arlington, Texas, and Jessica Keck and Allen Hall of Knoxville; and many great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mance will be remembered by all who knew her as a servant of the Lord giving love, hugs and kisses to all she came in contact with. Barbara Duggins Shelton, 76, of Norris, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Dec. 28, 1928, in Kewanee, Ill., she was the daughter of Joseph W. and Alma Ruth Duggins. She was a member of Norris Religious Fellowship Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Duggins, and a special friend, Arnette Crabtree. Mrs. Shelton is survived by her daughters, Joan Hughes and husband, Hugo (Kelly), of Powell, and Terry Shelton and special friend, Joel Brindley, of Norris; a daughter-in-law, Mary Shelton of Norris; her grandchildren, Ryan Shelton and wife, Lainey, of Norris, Glenn Shelton and wife, Ruth, of Knoxville, Emily Young and husband, Randall, of Cookeville, Katy Hughes and Joe Hughes, both of Norris; great-grandchildren, Sophie Shelton and Paul Shelton, both of Norris, and Ambrose Shelton of Knoxville. Edward "Ed" Stair Sr., 78, of Clinton, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. He was a member of Clinton Second Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during World War II in Germany and Korea. He was a chemical operator who worked for the Y-12 plant and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Mr. Stair was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Edna Byrd Stair, and his brothers, Howard and Malachi Stair. He is survived by wife of 56 years, Betty Nichols Stair of Clinton; his sons, Eddie Stair Jr. and wife, Kathy, and Mike Stair and wife, Sharon, all of Clinton; his brothers, Gene Stair and wife, Joanne, and J.W.
