    2. Gerald Lay
    3. Hello List: Just a note concerning the obit of GIRTRUE McFADDEN below. Girtrue was one of the first serious Lay researchers I met. In the early years of my research ( early 1980's ). Cuz'in John, you may remember her endeavor to get the city of Lafollette to recognize and provide help in cleaning the overgrowth in the Forrest Street cemetery. Where it is thought some civil war soldiers graves may be? She done a lot of the work herself. My understanding is Girtrue thought she was a descendant of Colonel Isaac Lay, through his son Jackson Lay's daughter Celia, as best as I remember. Is not Colonial Isaac Lay thought to have been a brother to John M. Lay of Elk Valley? MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! 2. Cuz'n John
    3. Hi Gerald, I hated to see the obituary for Girtrue she was a second cousin once removed, we share the common ancestor's, Andrew Jackson Burris and Lavinia Beach. They were her Great Grandparents and my 2nd Great Grandparents. The Soldier that Girtie was so concerned about being buried on North 8th Street was a Revolutionary War Soldier by the name of 'CABBAGE' and there may be also other VETERANS of the GAR and other wars at this location. To her, all veterans were deserving of 'A decent well kept burial site' and I feel the same way being that I am also a veteran. She once told me on a trip to the Old Massengill Cemetery, "We Veterans have to take care of each other the Government sure ain't goin' to do it"! Yes she showed up at City Council on several occassions and raised 'The Devil' about how the City should be taking care of this site and other Cemeteries like Laborn Sharp on South 8th street, and when the City cut down the Tree's at the North 8th site it was a good thing she didn't have a shotgun handy.
