Kent was a graduate of Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind., attended Translyvania University in Lexington, Ky., and graduated from the Memphis Academy of Fine Arts in Memphis. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Blaney Carter; a daughter and son, Sarah Elizabeth Carter and Aden Douglas Carter, both at home; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Carter of Clinton; a brother, Vance Carter of Knoxville; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W. Gerald Blaney of Chalk Hill, Penn. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 71 N. Gallatin Ave., in Uniontown, Penn. The Rev. Paul Frank will officiate. Burial will be in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, in Uniontown, Penn. James Vernon Chapman, 60, of Oak Ridge, formerly of South Carolina, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born on June 2, 1944, in Newberry County, S.C., to George and Nena Martin Chapman. Mr. Chapman had been a contractor for Ridgeway Mining Service in South Carolina. He attended Heritage Fellowship Church of God in Oak Ridge. An avid baseball fan, he enjoyed watching the Pomaria Braves of the early Negro League and the Atlanta Braves. He especially loved playing with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Ida Chapman; two daughters, Barbara Summers and husband, Kevin, of Oak Ridge, and Donna Wise of Chapin, S.C.; three sons, James Vernon Chapman Jr. and wife, Kim, of Killeen, Texas, James Arnez Holley and wife, Ethel, of Columbia, S.C., and Kelvin Holley and wife, Dianna, of Prosperity, S.C.; three brothers, Alfonso Chapman and Harold Chapman, both of Pomaria, S.C., and Ravenel Chapman of Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; mother-in-law, Bonnie Mae Williams; and several nieces, nephews and brothers- and sisters-in-law. John Samuel Harper Sr., 57, of Clinton, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at his home with his wife, Barbara; daughter, Christina; son, John; and daughter-in-law, Margaret, by his side. He was born on June 15, 1947, in Tazewell to the late Claude and Nelia Welch Harper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Della C. Majors Paschal, and his dear friend, James Roberts. Mr. Harper was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Clinton and was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army. He last worked as a sandblaster with Allied Structural Steel Co., before he became sick and disabled. He greatly enjoyed watching the University of Tennessee football games with his son, Johnny, and playing cards with his family and friends. Mr. Harper is survived by his wife, Barbara Gail Webber Harper; his son, John Samuel Harper Jr. and wife, Margaret; his daughter, Christina Ann Harper Crowley and husband, Rick; his grandchildren, Ashley Nicole, Katelyn Diana, and Destiny Cheyenne Harper; and his father-in-law, Calvin Webber Sr., all of Clinton. Lyla Erickson Minser, 92, of Maryville, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Maryville Health Center. The daughter of Arvid Constantine Erickson and Thilda Marie Torkelson Erickson, she was born on March 14, 1912, on a homestead prairie farm in Burke County near Kenmare, N.D. Mrs. Minser graduated from Kenmare High School and attended Jamestown College, in North Dakota, and the University of Minnesota. Arriving in 1942 from Minnesota, she and her husband were early pioneers of Oak Ridge, where Mrs. Minser lived for more than 50 years. She was one of the original members of the United Church Chapel on the Hill and was active in the choir and Women's Circle, and served Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital as a Gray Lady. She taught private piano lessons to scores of young people in Oak Ridge for more than 30 years. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Minser was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Minser Jr., and two brothers and two sisters, Rudolph Erickson, Floyd Erickson, Mildred Bell, and Verna Schlaht. She is survived by her daughter, Patty Minser McDonald of Atlanta, Ga.; her son, William G. Minser III of Maryville; grandchildren, Molly McDonald Gelber and Mathew McDonald, both of Atlanta, Bethany Minser Love of Denver, Colo., and Kate Minser of Wild Horse Canyon, Ore. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the United Church Chapel on the Hill in Oak Ridge. The daughter of Obe and Daisy Gibbs, she was born on June 24, 1927, in Anderson County. She was a member of First Christian Church in Oak Ridge. Her hobbies included playing Bingo, painting and spoiling her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Woodall was preceded in death by her husband, Noel D. Woodall Sr. She is survived by her son and his wife, Dana and Suzanne Woodall; stepson and his wife, Doug and Glo Woodall; stepdaughter, Peggy Woodall; grandchildren, Austin and Albany Woodall, and Becky, John and Matt Woodall; great-grandchildren, Heaven, Darius and Mia Woodall and Gabby Moser; and special friend, Connie Worrel.
