A veteran of World War I, Phillips served with the Army's 89th Infantry in the European Theater. Bunch was a native of New River had been ill over a year. He retired from mining to work as a guard at Walnut Mounain Coal Co and Volunteer Coal Co in New River for the past ten years. Bunch was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. A Baptist, he enjoyed talking on his CB radio. Mr Phillips was born May 14, 1922 in New River. He was a lifelong resident of this area, moving from New River to Oliver Springs in 1969. Charlie worked as both a logger and a coal miner. He worked in area coal mines, saw mills, and log woods. He was preceded in death by wife; Christine Kennedy Phillips; parents, Fletcher and Bessie Graham Phillips; grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn Phillips and Agbert Ray Phillips II; brother, Carl Phillips; and sister, Mae Phillips Bunch.
