Britton Hoskins, 71, of Batley Rd., Clinton Rt.5, died Saturday morning at Oak Ridge Hospital of cancer. He had been undergoing treatment for the disease for a year and a half and was admitted to the hospital just an hour before he died. A Marlow native, Hoskins enlisted is the Army 1927 at the age of 22 and served in three war, the first being the Sino-Japanese War of 1935.He was assigned to the protection of American interests in China during that war. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and was offered a battlefield commission but refused.During the Korean War, Hoskins who was fluent in several languages, served military intelligence,interrogating prisoners of war. He retired from the Army in 1957 but continued a career in government service with Naval intelligence.He was assigned to Washington D.C. in 1961 and retired in 1971,remaining in Washington until returning to this area in 1974. He and his Japanese wife, Mrs. Shizu Hoskins, built their retirement home in Marlow before he became ill.His adopted son, James K. Hoskins, also Japanese and a career Army man, was assigned to duty in Knoxville when his father's illness was discovered.Besides his wife and son, he leaves two granddaughters, a sister, Mrs. Lillie Munds of Clearwater, Fla.,and three brother, Sam Hoskins, Frank Hoskins and Alfred Hoskins, all of Clinton, Rt.5.
