Clinton Courier News - Nov 27, 1986 A mover and shaker for health and education for many years, Byrd W Duncan Sr, 86, of Briceville Rt 1, died last Thursday night at his home. Duncan was the first president of Briceville People's Health Clinic and was active in the March of Dimes for 54 years, promoting and participating in Gospel singing for MOD. A longtime resident of Pilot Mountain, Duncan was a member of the old County Court and was president of the Briceville PTA "for more years than he remembers" according to an interview written 14 years ago. His participation in health projects in his community made him known in Nashville and he was invited to Governor Winfield Dunn's inauguration in 1970. Known by those who respected him as "the old man of the mountain" and "a legend in his own time" Duncan, was a member of the Laurel Grove Baptist Church, Crystal Lodge 616 F&AM, and was a veteran of World War I. He was preceded in death by a daughter; Mrs Thelma Adkisson. Duncan is survived by his wife; Mrs. Laura Patterson Duncan; daughter, Mrs Beulah Comer of Lake City; five sons, Ray and Byrd Duncan Jr, both of Clinton, Marcus Duncan of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Wendell and Langley Duncan, both of Briceville; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev Edwin Phillips officiating. Burial was in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
