    1. [TNANDERS] First Oak Ridge Marriage - Roland Krueger; Elaine Kenyon
    2. Published after the "Secret City" was official.... No Pictures Were Permitted of First Oak Ridge Wedding Mr. and Mrs. Roland F. Krueger, 105 Disston Road, Oak Ridge, stepped forward today to claim the distinction of being first couple to be married within the huge project at the Chapel on the Hill. "We were married Oct. 18, 1943, just a little while after the church had been built", said Mrs. Krueger, the former Miss Elaine Kenyon. "It had rained the day before, and my husband's best man and I had to go to the church the afternoon of the wedding and sweep it out, before the ceremony could be held." Mrs. Krueger said at that time no pictures of the wedding could be made, even though it was a formal ceremony, and no mention of where the ceremony took place could be sent even to home town papers. An article in Los Angeles papers, Mrs. Krueger's home, carried the wedding as having occurred in Kenwood, Tenn., a fictitious place. "Since no pictures could be made at the time, we plan to have pictures of the wedding party taken at the church this week," said Mrs. Krueger. Her husband, who formerly was employed at Kingsport, is a native of Wisconsin. He is now a refinery production employe. Second wedding, according to Mrs. Krueger, was that of John and Mary Hatfield, and the third, on Oct. 29, 1943, was Pvt. and Mrs. William David Lyon, Jr. The road leading to the church at that time was "nothing but mud," Mrs. Krueger said. Knoxville News-Sentinel; August 9, 1945 There is a photo of the couple which accompanies the article if anyone is interested.
