From The Oak Ridger 27 Jan 2005 Ruth Bishop Copeland, 93, a longtime resident of the Swan Pond community, Douglas Edward Fain Sr., 73, of Harriman, Marshall Jones, 85, a resident of the Dutch Valley community in Anderson County, Angie Morgan Perry, 103, of Clinton, Harry Clifton Savage IV, 54, of Knoxville, Harry Clifton Savage IV, 54, of Knoxville, Clarence Hawkins, 68, of Oak Ridge, June Elaine Paulus, 56, of Oak Ridge, Ruth Bishop Copeland, 93, a longtime resident of the Swan Pond community, died on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Windwood Health and Rehab Center in Clinton. She was a resident of Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center for many years, and was a member of the Swan Pond United Methodist Church in Harriman for 50 years. In addition to her parents, Samuel Oscar and Martha Farmer Bishop, Mrs. Copeland was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank "Whitey" Copeland Sr.; her son, Frank "Buddy" Copeland Jr.; her sister, Edith; four maternal aunts, Ona Murray, Daisy Overton, Ollie Hicks and Florence Peoples; three step-brothers, Eugene, Chester and Ora Wyrick; and one step-sister, Alma Steadman. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bill T. Hicks of Clinton, formerly of Oak Ridge; her son, Gerald Copeland of Harriman; and her daughter-in-law, Debbie Melton Copeland, also of Harriman; five grandchildren, LeeAnn Hicks Sherrill and husband, Joe, of Crossville, Bill "Chip" Hicks and wife, Susan, of Knoxville, Chris Copeland and wife, DeAnna, of Harriman, Kym Copeland Barker of North Carolina, and Nikki Copeland of Knoxville; eight great-grandchildren, Landon and Zachary Sherrill, Adam and Chad Kennedy, Allie and Myia Copeland, and Teddy and Spencer Barker; two great-great-grandchildren, Hannah and Chad Garet Kennedy; one step-sister, Allyne Griffey of Whittier, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Grace Stout and Bernice Howerton, both of Knoxville, and Nellie Copeland of Jacksonville, Ala.; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in the chapel of Davis Funeral Home in Harriman. The Rev. Louis Hill will officiate. The burial will follow in the Swan Pond United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home in Harriman. Douglas Edward Fain Sr., 73, of Harriman, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, following a strongly fought battle with cancer. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He graduated in 1949 as class valedictorian from Wetumpka High School in Alabama, and from Auburn University, summa cum laude, earning a bachelor's degree in 1956 and a master's degree in 1957. He also had extensive doctorate work in physics at the University of Tennessee. Mr. Fain came to Oak Ridge in 1957 and worked at K-25 throughout his career, retiring in 2002 as director of membrane technology . He devoted his professional life to the field of inorganic membrane science and technology. In 1997, his Colleagues worldwide had occasion to honor his contributions to the field and he was lauded as being "internationally recognized by the membrane community as Mr. Inorganic Membrane; the epitome of excellence in his field and as having performed valuable services to the nation; one of the pioneers in the field of inorganic membranes; and as heading a program that has no peers in the outside world." He authored numerous papers, both classified and unclassified, and held numerous patents. He was equally devoted to his volunteer work on behalf of people with mental retardation. He served in leadership roles at the local, state and national levels from 1968 until his death. He was a member and leader of the Association for Retarded Citizens (later the Arc) for 37 years, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Greene Valley Developmental Center for 16 years, and the recipient of numerous awards and commendations for this work. He held many other positions and made outstanding contributions to the quality of life of all people with disabilities. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara Elizabeth Fain Hughes and Albert Fain, both of Wetumpka, Ala. Mr. Fain is survived by his wife, Patricia McNicholas Fain; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas Jr. and Marsha Fain, and David M. Fain; and their mother, Billie Fain, of Knoxville; grandchildren, Kristie Fain Rowan and husband, Tim, and great-grandchildren, Macon and Emma Rowan, of Lenoir City; Alicia Jane Fain, Douglas Edward Fain III, and Cara Ford and husband, Todd, and great-grandchildren, Riley and Brady Ford; and Amy Renfro and husband, Chris, all of Knoxville; stepchildren, Pamela Smith of Atlanta, and Adam Smith and wife, Emily, and their children, Jordan and Kyle Smith, of Loganville, Ga.; a sister, Joan Fain; an uncle, Joe Billy Fain and his wife, Mae; numerous cousins, all of Wetumpka, Ala.; and his mother-in-law, Betty Hartman of Tampa, Fla. The funeral will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Ron Russell officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Stephen Damos officiating. Marshall Jones, 85, a resident of the Dutch Valley community in Anderson County, died on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Jones was born on July 24, 1919, in Anderson County. He resided most of his life in Tennessee, living in Michigan for 10 years. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Dutch Valley Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Charlie Jones and Etta Long Jones, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel Vickery Jones; his granddaughter, Lavonna Miller England; and his brothers, Charlie Jones Jr., Ralph Jones, John Jones and Clyde Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Shelby England of Clinton; son, Alvin Jones, of Clinton; his grandchildren, Aaron England, David Allen Jones, Richard Jones and Brian Keith Jones; his great-grandchildren, Kalleen England, Briar England, Deanna England, Joshua David Jones, Bradley Allen Jones, and Jared Jones; his brother, Roy Jones of Daltonia, Fla.; and his sisters, Mary Dye, Elizabeth Jones and Stella Jones, all of Clinton, and Helen Jones of Albertsville, Ala. The funeral will be at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. The Rev. Luke Kidwell and the Rev. Ricky Howard will officiate. The burial will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Long Cemetery in Dutch Valley. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home in Oliver Springs. Angie Morgan Perry, 103, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge. Born on Aug. 23, 1901, in Cooper, Texas, she was the daughter of John Thomas and Edna Lambeth Morgan After receiving a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and a master's degree from Columbia University in New York City, she taught in Louisiana and in Texas. While teaching in Galveston, Texas, for 14 years she met her husband, William Preston Perry. During the World War II years, they moved to Tennessee, where Mrs. Perry taught for 23 years in the Oak Ridge school system, from 1944 to 1967. In 1951, they built their home in Clinton and enjoyed it for 10 years together until her husband's death in 1961. Through the years she maintained active memberships in Delta Gamma, Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton, and several social clubs. Her hobbies included reading, entertaining friends, gardening, and playing bridge. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded her in death by her brother, Bernie Morgan. Mrs. Perry is survived by her nephew, John W. Morgan and his wife, Ellen Corenswet; her grandniece, Brianna Morgan; and step-grandnephew, Jake Kirsch, all of New York, N.Y.; and by her sister-in-law, Ernestine Morgan of Houston, Texas. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Don Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements. Harry Clifton Savage IV, 54, of Knoxville, died suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005. Mr. Savage was born on April 20, 1950, and raised in Oak Ridge. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1968. He was on the Oak Ridge High School track team and played bass guitar in a rock band. Music was very important to him and he remained active in the music community throughout his life. He played bass guitar in several bands over the years, including Clockwork, Skyline, Cameo Ritz, Casual Sax and Philip Knight and the Days. Mr. Savage was a long-time supporter of the Jubilee Community Arts and was involved in the revitalization efforts of downtown Knoxville. He was a friend of the Unitarian Universalist Church and a lifetime member of the Mountain Retreat and Learning Center, a Unitarian camp in Highlands, N.C., where he enjoyed spending weekends with his family. He was employed by Knox County in the Information Technology Department. Mr. Savage was preceded in death by his father, Harry Clifton Savage III, on Feb. 2, 2003. He is survived by his mother, Lillian Willoughby Savage of Oak Ridge; his daughters, Cassie and Paula Savage and their mother, Carolyn Greenwood, all of Knoxville; his sisters, Nancy Savage Ho, her husband, Ivan C. S. Ho, and their children, Nathan, Julaine and Brenton Ho, all of Renton, Wash., and Ellen Savage Morar, her husband, Grant C. Morar, and their children, Sarah, Hannah and George Morar, all of Knoxville. A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 212 N. Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, with the Rev. Craig M. Kallio and the Rev. Claire Keene officiating. The burial will be in the memorial gardens of the church. The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the funeral and burial.
