Robert Arthur Ebel, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Robert was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Anne Bachland Ebel and Arthur August Ebel. He was born at home, and his twin sister, Shirley Anne, was born next at the Swedish Hospital. He had a wonderful mother, a wonderful father, and two magnificent sisters, Dee and Shirley Anne, who was his constant companion in his formative years. As a boy he was a good student, and playing football and swimming were his extracurricular activities. In 1936, he was the breaststroke champion of all eight Minneapolis high schools. He attended the University of Minnesota and earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He married Dorothy Mary Ballance on Dec. 27, 1940. She was his one and only, the true love of his life. On Feb. 5,1941, he went on active duty as a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps, serving in Alaska during the defensive phase of World War II. Later, in the offensive phase of the war, he became a combat engineer and served in Okinawa. He was discharged from the service on March 15, 1946, with the rank of captain. He returned to the University of Minnesota to refresh his chemical engineering skills, pursuing a master's degree. His thesis was titled "Diffusion Rates in Porous Solids" and was judged to be of doctorate quality. As a result he was awarded a doctorate with a major in chemical engineering and a minor in mathematics in 1949. He also became an emeritus member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. He came to Oak Ridge in October 1949 and went to work for the Gaseous Diffusion Plant in the Operations Analysis Division. It was the start of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. In the arms race that followed, the diffusion plants were enlarged until they consumed 10 percent of the total power being generated in the United States. His interest was improving the thermodynamic and fluid dynamic efficiency of every stage. By so doing, the overall unit productivity was increased threefold compared to the original K-25 plant. His family life centered around his two boys, Jack David Ebel and James Arthur Ebel. They were in Indian Y Guides, Boy Scout Troop 224, and the Atomic City Aquatic Club. He served as president for several terms. The boys were brought up in Grace Lutheran Church. Robert retired from the Gaseous Diffusion Plant in 1983. For the next 10 years he traveled with his wife to every continent, including Australia. They saw the points of interest and studied the history of each country they visited. He loved to write, and authored books on the history of his family, going back to the Civil War, and also a book on their travel adventures. Lately, he had been occupied primarily with his children, grandchildren, and working at Grace Lutheran Church. He always felt that he had been truly blessed in his career, in his family life, and in his spiritual life. Mr. Ebel is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy B. Ebel; his sons, Jack Ebel and wife, Penelope, of Lexington, Ky., and Jim Ebel and wife, Rose, of Oak Ridge; his sisters, Dorothy Lohman of Houston, Texas, and Shirley Jesberg of Phoenix, Ariz.
