From The Oak ridger 28 Jan 2005 Stanley Robinson Ashton, 88, a resident of Gatlinburg, formerly of Clinton, Norman Lynn Dykes, 77, a native of Somerset, Ky., and a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, Clarence Evans Hawkins, 68, of Oak Ridge, Dorothy "Dot" Stevens Hinshaw, 83, From the Oak Ridger 28 Jan 2005 Stanley Robinson Ashton, 88, a resident of Gatlinburg, formerly of Clinton, died on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborne Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born the youngest of four children in New Bedford, Mass. Mr. Ashton worked for 25 years for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge. He and his first wife, Barbara, taught the original Author Murray style of dance in Oak Ridge in the late 1940s. He was manager of the Oak Ridge Municipal Pool in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He unselfishly gave 40 years of volunteer work to the Oak Ridge American Red Cross. From age 12 to 75, Mr. Ashton won hundreds of medals and awards at swim meets. He held the record for the fastest 50-meter swim at the University of Tennessee for many years. The plaque recognizing his acceptance into the Tennessee Swimming Hall of Fame hangs at the University of Tennessee Aquatic Center today. Known for his kindness and ability to make friends, Stan will be missed by thousands of people who have come to know him as a friend. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Barbara Allen Ashton. He is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle Milligan Ashton, and her wonderful family, including sons Gary Ashton, Ken Ashton and Stanley (Lee) Ashton; and the entire extended family including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may attend a memorial service at Trinity Episcopal Church on Airport Road in Gatlinburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005. It is requested that rather than flowers or any other gift, memorials to Mr. Ashton be in the form of a donation sent, in memory of Stanley R. Ashton, to the American Red Cross, 908 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Norman Lynn Dykes, 77, a native of Somerset, Ky., and a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born on Jan. 10, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, the son of George and Vena Dykes of Somerset, Ky., who are both deceased. Mr. Dykes was a member of New York Avenue Church of Christ in Oak Ridge, where he served as a deacon and elder for many years. He, along with his wife, Bettye Faye, enjoyed serving others and being there for church, family, friends, and neighbors when they needed help. Mr. Dykes was a graduate of United Electronics Laboratories of Louisville, Ky. He attended the University of Tennessee. He was with the U.S. Army, serving with the Army Security Agency during the Korean War. Mr. Dykes retired from Lockheed Martin Energy Systems Inc. after 40 years of service doing research and development work as an engineering technologist. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed golf, fishing, watching his grandchildren play sports, and Kentucky basketball and football. One of his goals in life was to be a mentor for his daughter and randchildren, being a dad and Pap-Paw who provided Christian leadership filled with love and compassion of Christ, filling voids when needed and helping shape hearts to do good. Mr. Dykes is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bettye Faye Dykes; his daughter, Kathy Lynne McClintock of Nashville; and his three grandchildren, Michael Ross McClintock of Cookeville, Beth Faye McClintock and Ryan Dykes McClintock, both of Nashville. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the New York Avenue Church of Christ with Frank Swinson and Harold Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Weatherford Mortuary. An on-line guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com. Clarence Evans Hawkins, 68, of Oak Ridge, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born on April 11, 1936, in Caryville, Tenn., the son of Freeman and Geneva Rogers Hawkins. He was a veteran who served with the U.S. Army. Mr. Hawkins retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems and the Y-12 National Security Complex, where he was a machinist supervisor. He was a member of Spurgeon Chapel AME Zion Church. As a pastime, he enjoyed fishing. Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife of 41 years, Betty Jo Burum Hawkins; his son, Clarence Hawkins Jr. and wife, Donna, of Annapolis, Md.; his daughter, Geneva Thompson of Oak Ridge; six grandchildren, Tarence Hawkins, Telsia Hawkins, Xavier Hawkins, Aurora Hawkins and Gavin Hawkins, all of Annapolis, Md., and Ariel Thompson of Oak Ridge; nieces and nephews, Vilvian Garrison and husband, Charles, of South Carolina, Pamela Woods and husband, Eric, of California, Leroy White Jr. and wife, Sheila, of Texas, and Bruce White of Nashville; and a host of other relatives and friends. The graveside service and burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Road in Knoxville, with the Rev. Dorothy "Dot" Stevens Hinshaw, 83, died on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. The daughter of Talmadge and Mary Smith Stevens, Dorothy was born on July 3, 1921, in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mrs. Hinshaw was a member of the Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a great homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She also enjoyed raising flowers. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hinshaw was preceded in death by her brother, Buddy Stevens. Mrs. Hinshaw is survived by her husband, T. Speas Hinshaw of Oak Ridge; two sons, Steve Hinshaw of Knoxville and Thornton Hinshaw and wife, Ann, of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Virginia Criner and her twin sister, Doris Kapp, both of Winston Salem, NC; two grandchildren, Sarah and Christopher Hinshaw of Melbourne, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews, including Connie Owens. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Flynn officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the funeral home.
