Dr. Gerard "Gerry" John Bunick, age 60, of Oak Ridge, was taken by an angel to be with the Lord on Sept. 19, 2007, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, after an 11-year battle with multiple cancers. He was born on May 27, 1947, in Boston, Mass., the son of Frank and Helena (Bujnicki) Bunick. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dr. Elaine M. Bunick; his son, Dr. Christopher G. Bunick and wife, Lilia Urquiza, of Nashville, Tenn.; and his daughter, Dr. Elissa Bunick-Fleming and husband, Dr. Scott D. Fleming, of Birmingham, Ala. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. Frank J. Bunick and wife, Dr. Shan Shan, of Randolph, N.J., and Dr. David J. Bunick and wife, Carrol, and their daughters, Nicola and Jacquelyn of Champaign, Ill. Other living family members include his godmother, Genevieve Milos, and her children, Bruce Milos and Marcia Gobiel along with her husband, Paul, and their son, Dennis, of Holyoke, Mass., and his most beloved cat, Catlina. Gerard graduated from Newton South High School, Newton, Mass., in 1965, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1969, and received his Ph.D. in biological chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976, where he was the first graduate student of Dr. Donald Voet. There he determined the molecular structures of some analogues of components of DNA such as 9-[beta]-D-arabinofuranosyladenine and 9-[3-(3-indolyl)-propyl]adenine, the latter a model for protein-nucleic acid interactions. He also worked on the structure of inorganic pyrophosphatase, an enzyme that converts pyrophosphate, the product of reactions involving ATP, into two phosphate ions. Gerard took a position in the Chemistry Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1977 and between 1982 and 1990 worked in the Solid State Division there. Recently he moved his laboratory to the University of Tennessee. He has been recognized and lauded for his work nationally and internationally. His main area of study has been molecular structure by diffraction methods using X rays or neutrons with crystalline specimens. He has outstanding publications using both types of radiation. Gerard worked with his colleagues on the structure of the nucleosome core particle. The structure consists of about 146 base pairs of superhelical double-stranded DNA wrapped around an octomer of histones. Gerard's work helped establish how the packaging of DNAs and proteins occurs. Gerard also pioneered the use of crystal annealing, a method that improved the diffraction ability of some protein crystals. In order to improve crystal diffraction he also grew many protein crystals in space, using both the NASA space shuttles and the International and Mir Space Stations. He enjoyed mentoring students from high school to post doctoral fellows. He wrote chapters for many of the chemistry and crystallography textbooks. He loved music and played the clarinet in both the high school and UMass marching bands. He was also an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church supporting the Haiti Parish Twinning Program. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Bill McKenzie and the Rev. Michael Woods officiating. A reception will follow in the Columbus Hall.
