Fraterville Miners' Circle added to the National Register of Historic Places January 24, 2005 The Coal Creek Watershed Foundation recently announced that the Fraterville Miners' Circle in Leach Cemetery has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 200 men and boys perished in the 1902 Fraterville Mine explosion, the worst disaster in the history of mining in the South. Farewell messages written by the Fraterville miners were published in newspapers around the world, raising public awareness to the dangers of coal mining and starting us down the long road toward safer working conditions for miners in this country today.
