Hey Deborah, I just now viewed your email & it cleared up the e-mail I received (to the list) from Jerry Bryan. (I saw Jerry's 1st) & I was really confused, <g> I thought Lord, did I use Susannah Epperson instead of Nancy in one of my e-mail's to someone. Happy to have this cleared up. If you see the email I sent to the list in reply to Jerry's, I made the statement it is my belief Susannah Epperson was Nancy Epperson's aunt. I hope the information I provided will help. I feel better now, thought I had really lost it. Hey Jerry, I'm uncertain to whom you directed your email me or Deborah Oneal? You addressed Gloria in your email & it appears Deborah Oneal was the originator? I was a little confused but I'm including my Foust/Epperson lineage. Your stated: Are you sure that Susan Epperson Moore was your eighth great grandmother? It's possible, I suppose, but I have her dates as 24 Feb 1767 to 13 Jan 1850. Are you sure that Susan Epperson Moore was your eighth great grandmother? My statement is: Susan Epperson Moore is not my eighth great grandmother. ***** My line is Nancy Epperson. It is my belief (& I guess only my belief), & most everyone does not agree; Susannah Epperson b Feb 24, 1767 d Jan 13, 1850 Anderson Co, TN & m to James C Moore b Jan 15, 1764 d Nov 22, 1838 was an aunt to my Nancy Epperson b Abt. 1788/90 & d Bef. 1855 Anderson Co, TN & not a sister, (even though Mary Ann Foust Sartin made the statement they were sisters) ? James Epperson b Abt. 1759 Albemarle Co, VA d Bef. 1840 Anderson Co, TN (possibly Ist wife unk)? because the only census I have Nancy Epperson listed is 1850 Anderson Co, TN & she is depicted as 62 making her born Abt 1788. I think it's more likely she was born Abt 1790. The possibly does exist, but it is my firm belief she is the dau of James Epperson & Kezia Powers & he was only married once. 1850 Anderson Co, TN Census Records DANIEL IS LISTED HERE AS FOUSE Daniel FOUSE 60 NC Nancy 62 NC *** Mary 26 TN Nancy E 6 Lewis 1 Once again it is my belief & from my own research, James Epperson b Abt. 1759, Robert Epperson b Abt. 1764, & Susannah Epperson b Feb 24, 1767 are sister & brothers. My line: 1)James Epperson b Abt. 1759 Albemarle Co, VA d Bef. 1840 Anderson Co, TN m Jun 05, 1790 Wilkes Co, NC to Kezia Powers b Abt. 1763 Pitt, NC d Bef. 1840 Anderson Co, TN. 2)Nancy Epperson b Abt. 1788/90 Wilkes Co, NC d Bef. 1855 Anderson Co, TN m May 04, 1808 Knox Co, TN to Daniel Foust b Abt. 1790 NC d Bet. 1856 - 1857 Anderson Co, TN. 3)Charles Richard Foust b May 08, 1813 Knox or Anderson Co, TN d Jan 26, 1896 Anderson Co, TN m Abt. 1832/33 to Frances Fanny Griffith/Griffin b Mar 03, 1813 TN d Feb 18, 1896 Anderson Co, TN. 4)Andrew Jackson Foust b Oct 23, 1837 Knox Co, TN d Oct 06, 1922 Anderson Co, TN m Oct 13, 1868 Anderson Co, TN to Nicey Jane Lewallen b May 1846 Anderson Co, TN d 1915 Anderson Co, TN, dau of John Lewallen & Elizabeth I Bailey. (Andrew Jackson Foust m 2nd Sarelda Huckaby) Anderson Co, TN Marriage Records Andrew Jackson Foust married Nicey Jane Lewallen Oct 13, 1868. "Anderson Co, TN Divorces & Naturalizations, 1844-1920," by Edith Wilson Hutton Nicey applied to Anderson Co Court for a divorce July 13, 1871. The court records depict she was granted the divorce Nov 17, 1871. She received sole custody and control of their daughter Mary Etta [Marietta] Foust b Jul 19, 1869. In many records Mary Etta Foust name appears as Lewallen or Allen because Nicey was using her maiden name. This is an error in the records as Mary Etta was born a Foust. 5)Mary Etta 'Marietta' Ellen Foust b Jul 19, 1869 Anderson Co, TN d Mar 21, 1921 Anderson Co, TN m Dec 25, 1889 Anderson Co, TN to Pleasant Calloway White b May 26, 1867 Anderson Co, TN d Dec 14, 1934 Anderson Co, TN son of Spencer Pleasant "S P" White & Nancy Esqline Argenbright/Augarbright. 6)Beulah May White b May 31, 1908 Anderson Co, TN d Mar 24, 1998 Anderson Co, TN m Dec 22, 1928 Anderson Co, TN to Oda Agee Harmon b Sep 11, 1901 Campbell Co, TN d Jun 14, 1975 son of Samuel "Sam" Harmon & Nancy Dolly "Nannie" Shelton. 7) Gloria Fay Harmon m Charlie Benjamin Burris son of John Spurgon Burris & Lillie Isabelle Seiber. 8) B Shane Burris Original email. The following is a portion of the William E. Parham papers located in the McClung Library, Knoxville, TN. Mary Ann Foust stated: "My mother was Nancy Epperson, her sister Susan m James Moore; another m Abner Pear; another m old John Cox; I married Eli Sartin." This is probably the best statement that could have ever been made to prove Nancy Epperson's last name was EPPERSON & not Humphrey's even though she was married as Nancy Epperson May 4, 1808 Knox Co, TN to Daniel Foust; but for whatever reason everyone wanted her to be Nancy Humphrey? Mary Ann Foust Sartin's statement: "My mother was Nancy Epperson. Mary's statement: her sister Susan m James Moore. I believe Susan is Nancy's aunt. Mary's statement: another m Abner Pear. Nancy Epperson did have a sister Mary Alice "Polly" Epperson who m Alfred Overton & Abner Pear. Mary's statement: another m old John Cox, This is the one I'm trying to figure out. Again any info would be appreciated. ----- Original Message ----- From: DEBORAH ONEAL To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 07, 2008 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [TNANDERS] TNANDERS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 17 Gloria, Thanks for the info on Nancy Epperson. It answers a lot of questions for me. I suspected that Nancy was the sister of my 8th Great Grandmother--Susan Epperson Moore. That's in interesting connection. I seldom write about my Moore family for some reason, but my gg grandmother Ferriba Salina (Salina) Moore married my gg grandfather Joseph A. (Joe) Bray on 17 Nov 1870 in Anderson County. James C. Moore Sr. and Susannah (Susan) Epperson were Salina's g grandparents. That means that James and Susan were my fifth great grandparents. Are you sure that Susan Epperson Moore was your eighth great grandmother? It's possible, I suppose, but I have her dates as 24 Feb 1767 to 13 Jan 1850. For many people, that's not far enough back in the past to have been their eighth great grandparents. Even if you are a good bit younger than me (highly possible!), sixth or seventh great grandmother seems more likely to me than eighth. I have not yet collected very much primary source data on my Moore family. Here is what I have for James and Susannah in the 1830 census. p.180a, line 6, Anderson County, Tennessee, 1830 James More Sr. 000110001-0000100001 slaves 121-11 11 total 00-04 0 0 1826-1830 05-09 0 0 1821-1825 10-14 0 0 1816-1820 15-19 1 0 1811-1815 20-29 1 1 1801-1810 30-39 0 0 1791-1800 40-49 0 0 1781-1790 50-59 0 0 1771-1780 60-69 1 0 1761-1770 James C. Moore Sr. 70-79 1 1751-1760 Susannah Epperson James C. Moore Sr. died in 1838. Susannah Epperson was enumerated as head of household in the 1840 census in Anderson County (as Susannah Moore, of course), but I haven't yet transcribed her 1840 census entry. Her death on 13 Jan 1850 was before the 1850 census enumeration. Jerry Bryan
Gloria, Thanks for the info on Nancy Epperson. It answers a lot of questions for me. I suspected that Nancy was the sister of my 8th Great Grandmother--Susan Epperson Moore. I think I can answer as to why everyone wanted her to be Nancy Humphreys. It comes back to the Spindletop Oil Money claim. There are many who have Nancy as sister to my 4th Gt Grandmother Sarah Humphreys/Humphries. Many have tried to attach Sarah's brother William to the William and the fabled "Pelham" Humphries of Texas oil claim fame. Elaborate stories have been told about how William came to East TN to visit with his sister Nancy on his way to Texas with "their brother Pelham". This has been proved to be totally false. I fear some have been duped out of a lot of money with the promise of riches and don't want to believe it was all for nothing.
