Clinton Courier May 25, 1972 Annie Baker Dies Tuesday At Oak Ridge Mrs. William C. (Annie) Baker, 87, of Marshall St. in Clinton, mother of Mrs. Gomer D. Hoskins Anderson County director of accounts and budgets, died at Oak Ridge Hospital. She had been a resident of Westmall Nursing Home and was admitted to the hospital about 10 a.m. Tuesday with pneumonia. She was the former Anna Mae Clontz of Alexander, N.C. She was the widow of William C. Baker who died in 1966. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Clinton, a past matron of Clinton Chapter 193, Order of Eastern Star, and past Noble Grand of Rebecca Lodge 52. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Hoskins of Marshall St., Clinton and Mrs. Claude C. Pickrell of Clearwater, Fla., one sister, Mrs. R.S. Morris of Asheville, N.C., six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Services were set for 3 p.m. Thursday (today0at St. Mark's United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Best officiate and burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

Clinton Courier Oct. 7, 1976 Father Of Hardware Owner Dies James Nick Sharp Sr., 88, of 2305 Washington Ave., Knoxville, died at 12:10 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Baptist Hospital of complication of age. He was the father of James N. Sharp Jr, owner of the Lake City Hardware. A retired steam-fitter, he was a member of Plumbers and Steam-fitters Union Local 102. A native of Lake City, he moved to Knoxville 25 years ago. While in Lake City he was a coal miner. A life-long Baptist he attended First Baptist Church of Lake City in earlier years. His hobbies were farming and gardening. Survivors in addition to his son, include his wife, Irene Colson Sharp, a daughter, Mrs. J. C. He had served as mayor and city councilman in Lake City and Justice of the Peace, and was once a member of the County School Board. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and was director of the First National Bank, former director of the First State Bank of Jacksboro, and a member of the First Baptist Church at Lake City. It is believed "Judge" Weaver once owned about half of the area now covered by Lake City. He was born Oct 24, 1864 in Knox County. He moved to Campbell County and from there to Anderson County as a boy. He married the former Josie Weaver of Georgia who survives him. Other survivors include three sons; D A, Otis, tourist home operator, and Carl, an employee of the city; two daughters, Mrs Grace Pemberton and Mrs Carl Duncan of Lake City; three sisters, Mrs Lizzie Weaver, Mrs Rufe Foust, Mrs Becky Vaught, of Heiskell; 14 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Clinton Courier Oct. 7, 1976 Lafollette Miner Dies Of Heart Attack Dock R. McCoy, 85, of 400 North 13th St., Lafollette Community Hospital of a heart attack. A retired miner, he had worked for Moore Coal Co., of New River, and he worked on his New River farm until about four years ago. He was a member of Moore's Chapel Baptist Church, Petros F&AM Lodge No.625 and the Lafollette Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth McCoy, three daughters, Claudine McCoy and Jamie Bary of Lafollette and Mrs. Faye Lowe of Clinton, a son Joe McCoy of Wartburg, 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Lake City with the Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. Burial and masonic services were held at Campbell Memorial Gardens.
Clinton Courier Oct.9, 1975 Ex-Clinton Woman Dies Of Attack A former resident and one-time Anderson County school teacher, Mrs. Maude Carden Brown, 84, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning at her home in Andersonville od a heart attack. Her health had been stable until the attack. Mrs. Brown, the widow of Willard F. Brown, resided in Clinton, where her husband operated a grocery store, from 1925 until 1955. She taught in five schools over a 16 year period, beginning at the age of 18 at Beech Grove Elementary School. She later taught at Briceville, Andersonville, Belmont and Clinton schools. A native of Andersonville and the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. W. L. Carden, she had resided there on Highway 61 since her husband's death 1955. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Andersonville and continued regularly to attend services until her death. Mrs. Brown is survived by one sister, Mrs. Roger Redden of Andersonville. Funeral services were Tuesday in the chapel of Holley Gamble Funeral and was conducted by the Rev. Marvin Nail. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery.
Clinton Courier Oct.9, 1975 Youth's Car Overturns One Killed, three uninjured In Wreck A Clinton Senior High School student was killed last Wednesday night, Oct.1, when his car overturned on Sulphur Springs Rd. near Clinton Coal Yard. Gilbert Dewey Daugherty, 16, apparently died of head injuries. Anderson County Ambulance Service said. It appeared the youth was thrown into the windshield, although his body remained in the car after the impact, State Trooper David A. King said. The accident occurred about 10:15 p.m. Three passengers in the car, a 1970 Ford, were not injured. They were Clois Roysden, 18 of South Clinton, Mike Jernigan, 17, and David Jernigan 16 brothers, of Clinton Rt.3. Daugherty made his home with his mother, Hassie Daugherty, at Shady Grove Trailer Park on Laurel Rd., Clinton Rt.3. He was a junior at CSHS and was employed through the Neighborhood Youth Corps. Trooper King reported that the youths were traveling west on Sulphur Springs Rd. 1, 000 feet west of Skyline Drive, on a curve, when Daugherty, lost control of the car. The road was slick from rain, the officer noted. The car left the road on the south side and overturned. The car , owned by the victim's mother, was demolished. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home, Oliver Springs, with the Rev. Dana Ward officiating. Burial was in Anderson Memorial Gardens. Besides his mother, Daugherty leaves three brothers, Noah and Kenneth Daugherty of Clinton Rt.3 and Patton Daugherty of Devonia Rt.1, four sisters, Mrs. Emily Packett of Clinton Rt. 3, Mary and Janet Daugherty of the home, and Phyllis Byrge of Clinton.
Clinton Courier Oct. 9, 1975 Lake City Republican Leader Dies A former Anderson County tax assessor and prominent Republican fiqure , Dewey A. Weaver, 77, died Monday at Oak Ridge Hospital after a long illness with a lung condition. His health first failed about eight years ago and he was forced to retire from public life. His condition had worsened over the past two years and he had been hospitalized intermittently during that time, returning to the hospital the day before he died. Weaver was elected tax assessor in 1943, serving until 1947, and later finished out three year of the term of William R. (Bill) Hicks. He ran as the Republican nominee for county judge in 1950. He was a native, and life-long resident of Lake City, residing on Sixth St. Beside serving as a public official, he enjoyed a variety of careers including farmer, merchant, real estate agent and lumber mill operator. He operated the Riverview Lumber Co. in Clinton for 15 years, selling the business when he retired in 1967. He was a veteran of World War I serving with the Army toward the end of the war without going overseas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake City and the Masons. Weaver and his wife, Mrs. Edith Pemberton Weaver, observed their 50th wedding anniversary in August. Beside his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Thomas R. (Dorothy) Steele of Lake City and Mrs. Raymond (Carolyn) Chambers of Oak Ridge, three grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Grace Pemberton of Lake City, and a brother, Carl Weaver of Lake City. Graveside services, conducted by Rev. Ron Clay will be Thursday (today) at 2 p.m at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton.
