Dusty, I hate to get into this but I need proof of my Great Grandmother being married to a White. Now Marie Kennedy or Patterson belonged to Mattie Patterson my Grand mother. She married Goldie Phillips's son Lonza or Lonzie. My Mother can remember when Goldies wife died but can't remember the year. Shirley **************Start the year off right. Dusty, I appreciate the information. My interest in Mary Aslinger is because her mother was Hannah Braden who was married to James A Aslinger. I'm a little confused by the marriage record. Anderson Co, TN Marriage Records James Aslinger 36, Sevier Co, TN miner, to Hannah Braden 23, Anderson Co, TN Feb 28, 1882 They were married Feb 28, 1882 but Mary Aslinger was born prior to their marriage (my date) July 3, 1881. That means Mary Aslinger was born 7 months before Hannah married James Aslinger??? Is it possible Mary Aslinger was an illegitimate dau of Hannah Braden or could it be possible she could have been an infant dau of James Aslinger & his 1st wife? Or Hannah could have been pregnant w/ James Aslinger prior to their marriage??? Either way, Mary went by Aslinger. Its possible Mary Aslinger was living with Golda in 1930 but I'm still confused with Diane Patterson. In the following census why is Diane Patterson not listed in Mary Aslinger's household as 4 years old if she is her daughter & listed in 1930? 1920 Anderson Co, TN Census Records Mary Patterson 36 Lewis 15 son Nancy Jane 9 dau Oma 5 dau Hannah Aslinger 58 mother Is this Mary Aslinger living w/ Golda Phillips in 1930 or is her children just in his household? If so why isn't Diane Patterson listed in Mary Aslinger's household in 1920 as 4 years old? 1930 Anderson Co, TN Census Records Golda Phillips 60 Mary 57 wife born 1873 Charlie 19 son Ernest 17 son Elonza 15 son Lillie 15 dau Clarence 11 son Viola 9 dau Diane Patterson 14 ste/dau *** (could this be Oma)??? Elsie 9 ste/dau Tommy 5 ste/son She wasn't listed in Golda household in 1920 either? 1920 Anderson Co, TN Census Records (hard copy) Golda Phillips 33 TN Mary 35 wife born 1885 Mitchell 16 son Charlie 9 son Ernest 6 son Alonzo 4 6/12 son Lillie 4 6/12 dau Clarence 1 son I questioned all of this because Mary Aslinger died as Mary Patterson as depicted in her obit so I guess she never married Golda. Golda died Jun 25, 1959 & Mary Aslinger died Nov 22, 1958 & was living with her dau Mattie Patterson Kennedy Sweat. You have the oral history to support Mary Smith. It is my belief Mary Aslinger had 6 children w/ Milton/Melton Patterson & 2 illegitimate children after his death Jan 22, 1916 that went by Patterson. I have researched many families that drove me up the wall but this one is a real kicker! Once again thanks for your help. July 22,1916 Tragedy In Tenth Melton Patterson Killed And Eb Brown Dangerously Wounded Hot Words And Whisky Cause Of Shooting A terrible tragedy was enacted Saturday evening at the home of Melton Patterson, residing on Ligas Fork, in the Tenth district of Anderson County, resulting in the instant death of Patterson and dangerous wounding Eb Brown. The cause of the tragedy is said to be whisky and hot blood. Briefly the facts are as follows.Eb Brown, aged 23 years, and an elder brother had gone to the Patterson home and were invited to supper. The elder Brown went into the house, while the young man remained outside near a fence.Patterson grew angry from some reason, and arming himself went outside and opened a quarrell with Brown.Hot words and the lie passed, when Patterson shot Brown in the right side the ball passing clear through the body and making a dangerous, though not a fatal wound.Brown thereupon shot Patterson through the neck. almost seveiling the head killing him instantly.Patterson was about 50 years of age and leaves a wife and six children.Brown is in a Knoxville hospital, and doctors say that chances are good for his recovery. This makes the third killing in the Tenth district a month.

Gloria, Mary J. Feathrs was called Feathers (realy surname was Smith) because she was farmed out after her natural Daddy died in 1895. She was given to a family by the name of feathers. WHen her Momma remarried a man named James B White, her momma went to the feathers farm and reclaimed her baby girl. Mary was then known as a variation of names including Mary J. Smith Feathers WHite... Yikes!!!! Yours mine and ours!!!! I believ that Mary Patterson (widowed or divorced by the 1920 census)had children by (or became grandma to ) a Kennedy and then moved in with or married either Goldy Phillips, widower of Mary J. SMith Feathers WHite Phillips or his son Alonzo Dogwood Phillips. I'm pretty sure I'm right. What do you think? To answer your questions, Viola Smith is little sister of Mary J. Smith Feathers White Phillips and both are the sisters of my granddaddy Charles. 6 children were in this family and 4 were farmed out and apparently assumed the names of the families who took them. Their daddy died in 1895. I know that Mary J. Smith died in in the early 1920's because my grandaddy said so and his son, my uncle who is now 90 recalls the funeral !!! He also recalls that this was the last time he saw his cousins. Dusty Mary Patterson Phillips is sometimes listed as MARIE (Mary was a nickname for Marie). This is a confusing scenario, but the name Kennedy is also associated with her. I believe it is possible that this Mary is most likely the mother in law of one of Goldy's sons, either Alonzo or Charles. Very Very confusing. -----Original Message----- From: tnanders-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnanders-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Gloria Fay Burris Sent: Friday, January 18, 2008 7:18 PM To: tnanders@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNANDERS] Marie Phillips & Mary Aslinger??? Dusty, I'm sorry I can't confirm her death date. I was showing that because New Pilot Bapt Church Cem depicts Mary Phillips b (Unk) d July 1924? This could be any Mary Phillips or this could be Golda's wife??? There is another Mary E Phillips listed with Unk birth & Unk death??? What I have is: Anderson Co, TN Marriage Records Melton Patterson m Mary E Aslinger Jan 21, 1896. 1900 Anderson Co, TN Census Records Milton Patterson 25 May 1875 m/4/yrs TN Mary 16 July 1883 wife m/4/yrs 1/chi/1/liv *** born July 1883 Sallie 1 Sept 1898 dau HANNAH ASLINGER 43 Aug 1856 wid 6/chi/2/liv Calvin Aslinger 4 May 1896 bro/law I have hard copy of Anderson Co, TN Cemetery Records, Patterson Cem 1 depicts; Milton Patterson b (not listed) died July 22, 1916. I checked all names in the marriage records I have for Golda Phillips to a Mary Aslinger; checked for Golda Phillips married to Mary Patterson; didn't locate either. Even though Diane, Elsie, & Tommy Patterson were living in household of Golda I'm uncertain if the above records are Golda's wife Mary or they depict Mary Aslinger? I guess only family members will be able to solve this problem. I don't have Mary Aslinger listed as Golda Phillips wife in my records. You stated: Mary J. Smith is the sister to my granddaddy Charles David Smith. Was Mary J Smith married to a Feathers prior to her marriage to Golda? Was Viola Smith 18 sis/law unmarried in the 1910 census records & born a Smith? Thanks, don't mean to confuse just wanted to try & get it correct.
