Dusty, Sorry, it was not intent to offend anyone. You gave the oral history on your family & I was only trying to provide the documentation on Mary Aslinger. The descent of a person, family, is just that, you descend or you don't. You stated: Nah, my grandaddy and my 90 yr old uncle (nephew of Mary) says she had illegitmate kids as did her sister Viola. IN fact Viola Smitha and her illegitimate baby are living with Mary and family in 1910 in Anderson Co. My Uncle, born 1917 remembers going to Mary's (his AUnt Mary) funeral in the 1920's. Besides, its kinda of proof that its Mary SMith when she is naming the children after her sibs. Anyway here is the 1910 census, showing Mary J. Phillips, Goldy (GOLDA) and family. It is my understanding that Mitchell was born BEFORE her marriage/moving in with Goldy. Gloria - couldn't your dilemma be solved simply by the fact that people did not advertise that they were living together in sin, and therefore allowed - or encouraged the belief that they were a married couple? It was a very different time and women were branded if they weren't married and were with child or livng with a non spouse. As you note, Mitchell Phillips (who is NOT a Phillips) lives out his life using the name of the man who raised him - so as not to be singled out as "a bastard", I'm sure. My Uncle is pretty adamant that Goldy is NOT Mitchell's daddy, so it appears that Goldy misled the world in general for the sake of his woman's name and the child's future. Is any of this possible. Hot words and the lie passed, when Patterson shot Brown in the right side the ball passing clear through the body and making a dangerous, though not a fatal wound. Brown thereupon shot Patterson through the neck almost severing the head killing him instantly. Patterson was a! bout 50 years of age and leaves a wife and six children. Brown is in a Knoxville hospital, and doctors say that chances are good for his recovery. This makes the third killing in the Tenth district a month. In the following census Mary Aslinger is head of household because Milton Patterson was deceased as of Jan 21, 1916. If so why isn't Diane Patterson listed in Mary Aslinger's household in 1920 as 4 years old? It is my belief at this time Mary Aslinger moved in with Golda after the death of his wife in 1924 & I suspect Diane Patterson is Oma who is listed as 4 years old in 1920. Elsie & Tommy Patterson are children of Mary Aslinger borne after the death of Milton Patterson. 1930 Anderson Co, TN Census Records Golda Phillips 60 Mary 57 wife born 1873 (I guess this would be Mary Aslinger) ??? (The following 3 children belong to Mary Aslinger) Elsie 9 ste/dau Tommy 5 ste/son Living next door to Golda in 1930 is his brother Fletcher Phillips & his wife Bessie Pearl Graham w/2 children listed as grand-daughters. There is no way at 33 Fletcher Phillips could have grand-daughters? It is my belief Marie & Blanche Kennedy are the grand-daughters of Mary Aslinger livng next door with Golda Phillips. Clinton Courier, Nov 1958 Funeral services for Mrs Mary Patterson, 77, who died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs Mattie Sweat, on Caryville, Rt 1, were held Monday at Patterson Cemetery. The Rev Edwin Phillips and Rev Roy Patterson conducted the services. Survivors are two sons; Louis Patterson, Indiana, and Tommy Patterson, Briceville; six daughters, Mrs Sally Ward, Briceville, Mrs Mattie Sweat, and Mrs Oma Phillips, Caryville, Rt 1, Mrs Kansas Phillips, Oliver Springs, Mrs Nancy Patterson, Briceville, Elsie Huckaby, Clinton. There are also 34 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. Martin's at Lake City was in charge. It is my belief Mary Aslinger Patterson never married Golda Phillips; no record of a marriage has been located. I don't believe Golda Phillips every married again after his marriage to Mary Feathers or Smith as no record of a re-marriage for him as ever been located. Mary Aslinger to the best of my knowledge had 6 children Sallie, Mattie, Kansas, Lewis, Nancy Jane, & Oma with Milton/Melton Patterson & 2 illegitimate children Elsie & Tom after his death Jan 22, 1916. All listed in her obit. No mention of Golda Phillips children. It appears Golda Phillips had 7 children Leon (depicted in 1910 census records & born after the date of Golda's & Mary J Feathers/Smith marriage) Charles P, Alonza Lonzie, Lillie Mae, Ernest, Clarence, & Viola. Mary obviously had Mitchell prior to her marriage to Golda but he always went by Mitchell Phillips. Obit provided by Susie Bullock, Clinton, TN Clinton Courier July 2, 1959. A Briceville resident, Goldy Phillips, died suddenly at his home last Thursday. Funeral services were held for the former laborer Sunday afternoon at the New Pilot Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roy Patterson officiating. Burial was in the New Pilot Cemetery. Martin's of Lake City in charge of arrangements. Mr. Phillips was survived by four sons, Charlie Phillips of Oliver Springs, Lonzie Phillips of Ohio, Clarence Phillips of Clinton, and Mitchell Phillips of Briceville, two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Lowe of Wisconsin Mrs. Viola Aslinger of Briceville, three brothers, Charlie, Dewey, and Fletcher Phillips, all of Devonia, four sisters, Nancy Wilson of Lake City, Martha and Ellen Phillips both of Devonia, Ollie Bell Marlowe of Caryville. Of the 7 children borne to Golda & Mary J Feathers/Smith 2 were deceased; Leon probably before 1920 & Ernest Phillips who died Nov 23, 1953. Mitchell was born prior to their marriage. It doesn't appear Golda Phillips or Mary Aslinger had any children together? Why I was so confused over this whole issue is Mary Aslinger died as Mary Aslinger Patterson as depicted in her obituary. Mary Aslinger Patterson died Nov 22, 1958 as a Patterson & wasn't living with Golda Phillips. Golda Phillips died Jun 25, 1959 after the death of Mary Aslinger Patterson. Neither Mary Aslinger Patterson nor Golda Phillips's obituary depicted any of their children/step children in each other's obituary. Oral history has they lived together & as proven in the census there was a Mary in Golda's household in 1930 after the death of his wife in 1924. I have no idea how long Mary Aslinger Patterson was in the household of Golda Phillips? The only mention of Mary Aslinger being borne a Braden is depicted in the obit of her daughter Elsie Mae Patterson. It is stated she was the dau of Melton Patterson & Mary Braden. Melton wasn't her father as she was born Nov 08, 1920 4 years after his death. But whoever gave the info on Mary being borne a Braden may have had it right? Elsie Mae Huckaby Missionary Baptist member Elsie Mae Huckaby, 80, of Clinton, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Huckaby was born Nov. 8, 1920, in Anderson County, the daughter of Melton and Mary Braden Patterson, who are deceased. She was a member of North Clinton Missionary Baptist Church. Her family said she enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She was the widow of LeRoy Huckaby. Mrs. Huckaby is survived by her daughters, Josephine Martin, Imogene Henderson and Cheastean Wilson and her husband, Kenneth G. Wilson, and Maxine Wilson and her husband, Doug Wilson, all of Clinton, and Ruby Glenn and her husband, Ray Glenn, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and her son, LeRoy Huckaby Jr., and his wife, Barbara, of Buford, Ga. In addition to her husband and parents, two sisters and two brothers died earlier: Sally Ward, Kansas Phillips, Lewis Patterson and Tom Patterson. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Jim Ault officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. My interest in this family is solely because of Hannah Braden born Aug 1856? Anderson Co, TN & d Oct 27, 1927. She married James Aslinger Jan 12, 1882 Anderson Co, TN. James was born Abt 1846 Sevier Co, TN & died Bef 1900? Anderson Co, TN Marriage Records James Aslinger 36, Sevier Co, TN miner, to Hannah Braden 23, Anderson Co, TN Feb 28, 1882. Hannah Braden depicted Indian Bluff Cem as born Aug 1850.1900 Census she was stated as Aug 1856? James & Hannah married Feb 28, 1882 but Mary Aslinger was born prior to their marriage (my date) July 3, 1881. That reflects Mary Aslinger was born 7 months before Hannah married James Aslinger??? Is it possible Mary Aslinger was an illegitimate dau of Hannah Braden or could it be possible she could have been an infant dau of James Aslinger & his 1st wife? Or Hannah could have been pregnant w/ James Aslinger prior to their marriage??? Either way, Mary went by Aslinger. Their daughter Mary Aslinger Patterson is the person being used in the indirect evidence of most of this discussion.
