MAN KILLED IN ROW OVER SALE OF CIGARETTES Andersonville, Tenn. (AP) - William Crawford was fatally shot Monday in an argument Anderson County Sheriff L. W. Bolton said grew out of refusal to sell a pack of cigarettes. Bolton said, James Reynolds, 70-year-old merchant, was charged with murder in connection with the affair, which took place in Reynolds' store. Crawford, 35-year-old Oak Ridge worker, asked for a pack of cigarettes and was refused, Bolton quoted Reynolds as saying. Judy Thank you for the story on the Christopher family. Cousin Marion told me that Earl was alive but that was a few years ago. He would be in his upper 80's or 90's by now if he was still living. I just looked on the Social Security Death index and there is a EARL CHRISTOPHER b:8-4-1913 died 12-9-2003. I just bet that is him. He was listed as 6 years old in 1920 census. I remember Uncle Garnett wearing overalls all the time too. But most did (S) When my husband died 1997, he was an avid fisherman and was well know in this area. He fished in many tournaments and won some. People always saw him with blue jeans, fishing jacket and he always wore a hat (baseball type). He only wore his suits to weddings and funerals. So when he died I took his favorite clothes for him to be buried in. I did not get the traditional spray of roses. I ordered spring flowers and had the florist to put 3 plastic fish among them. They were ugly fish...but if you had known Bob you would have known that he would have loved it.. Uncle Garnett's daughter's name was Lorine and her brother's name was Earl. Earl was born normal but as a young child he got sick and it left him mentally challenged. He hated wearing shoes. Was always barefoot in Devonia. He was always asking for cigarettes. Any time during the day you could hear the church bell ring or car horns honking. Earl would be doing them. I always thought maybe the illness made him deaf or partially deaf. Thought maybe he could hear loud noises. After many years of trying to find my Aunt Myrtle I found my cousin MARION HENRY CHRISTOPHER. He told me Earl was in a home and now wore shoes...My Aunt had died (1999) when I found Marion. He came from Indiana to visit me about 6 years ago but died not much longer afterwards of cancer. Garnett always wore overalls to church with a sports coat or a suit coat. He kept his hair so short--like a burr cut, I remember. I loved to hear him pray in church. He talked to God like God was standing right beside him and he talked to God like you and I talk to each other. When he laughed, it was "he he he". Lorine also went to church with us and liked to sing. She had a country twang like I'd never heard before, but she loved to sing and often sang solos. Garnett called Lorine's son "SweetPea". When Garnett died, Lorine asked my Dad what she should do about burying him in a suit. Buying one would have been a hardship on Lorine. Dad told her that Mr. Christopher always wore overalls and that was how she should bury him. And that's exactly what she did. I never was too close to Earl. I saw him occasionally outside on the porch of their house when Dad would take Garnett or Lorine home after church on a rainy or cold day. They lived within a mile of the church and usually walked. They didn't have a car. After Garnett and Lorine died, Earl was sent to a home, nursing home I suppose, and everyone was surprised by his level of intelligence. Seems as if his father and sister pampered him and he didn't let on that he was capable of speech and thought to the degree he exhibited at the new home. Lorine's children left the area and it was good to see her son last year after so many years. Millie: Garnett Christopher lived in Coalfield for many years and died here. He was a member of the church I attend. His daughter died fairly young and I saw his grandson last fall for the first time in probably 35 years. I'm not related, but it was interesting to see the name. I have a William Severs (born 1752 ) family who lived in Knox Co and was in Anderson Co from the beginning . He married Catherine Peck in l793 in Virginia and they lived in ANderson Co until 1848 (yes age 96) when he went to Nodaway Co Mo and died there in 1852 (age 100).but no DOB on the stone. I have located him in Germany but have little proof. I know the german persons DOB but cannot find the DOB for William 1752 as the german seems to have been born 1751 ( BEFORE the Calender change).
