SHOOTING AFFRAY IN TENNESSEE MAY LEAD TO A FEUD Clinton, Tenn., April 1, (INS) - Five persons were in jail here today, held in conection with two widely separated shooting affrays, in which Boyd York,21, was killed, and, Jess Hensley, 32, a .miner, was probably fatally wounded. The killing of York remains somewhat of a mystery, his body having been found riddled with bullets, near the scene where Dr. W.H. Eblen, mine physician was killed a week ago. Two men, Gomez Taylor and Wilse Bray, are held for York's death. Henry Scarborough and his son, Euella and Marion Childress are held for the shooting of Hensley following a quarrel at a party. The killings keep apace with Anderson county's' weekly records of murders, most of them occurring in the isolated mining section far back in the mountains. Clinton's Early Principal Here's another letter from Mary Roberts Scott, 85 years old, of 330 Winding Way, San Francisco, Calif., whose father was one of the early teachers in Clinton,Tenn, She writes: "I want to send $10 to Clinton, and with it send a story that happened about 1865 or 1866. "My father, Thomas Roberts, was a minister and scholar. 'Egghead' he would be called now. He was chaplain of the 12th Ohio Cavalry and was mustered out in east Tennessee. He was principal of the school in Clinton and my mother taught with him. "Many adult men attended who wanted to learn 'figgering.' This meant higher arithmetic. My father introduced elementary algebra which was not well known at that time. nown at that time.) "One day a man, I think his name was d'Armond, one of the leading families, persisted in disturbing the class. Father asked him to come out in the hall. D'Armond called him an insulting name and accused him of favoring Negroes over whites. Father said he was afraid that was not true, but that he had more respect for a Negro than for a white man that misbehaved. D'Armond knocked him down and mother shoved d'Armond down the stairs and hurt him. My parents lost the job. They went to Knoxville and often had hard times all through the reconstruction. Thanks, Jerry, I saw on the Anderson County TNGen website some acts regarding the boundaries of Oliver Springs. The majority lies in Roane county. If there's just one city, which I know there is, I wonder if you're born there if you put Roane, particularily if you were born at home?
>>In doing the newspaper searches, many instances state Oliver Springs, >>Tenn., >>but no county. Is there any way to figure out if the Oliver Springs >>mentioned >>is in Roane, Anderson or Morgan? And just a point of further clarification: there is only one Oliver Springs, just one mayor etc. It just happens to straddle three counties. It's not like Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia which from a governmental point of view are two separate cities even though they straddle the state line together. Jerry Bryan

>In doing the newspaper searches, many instances state Oliver Springs, >Tenn., >but no county. Is there any way to figure out if the Oliver Springs >mentioned >is in Roane, Anderson or Morgan? I encounter this issue all the time. I think the short answer is "no", unless additional clues are available. What I don't know (and would be curious about) is if there was a time when Oliver Springs was only in two countes, or maybe even only in one county. Jerry Bryan
