    2. Yankee Private Gives Dead Reds Religious Burial With U. S. First Cavalry Division, Korea. Pfc. William M. Cross, Devonia, Tenn., thought 12 communist soldiers should have some kind of religious service at their burial. So as each was lowered into the grave, the Tennessee soldier read the following passage from St. John: "I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life". Empty 75mm shell cases were used to mark the graves scattered on a North Korean hillside. "I did the best I could", said Cross. Sheboygan Press, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, October 24, 1951

    1. Hatmakers/Lindsay - Coal Creek War
    2. WILL TRY SMOKE Plan to Capture the Missing Riotous Miners at Coal Creek Gen. Carnes Thinks That Smoking the Mines Will Drive Out the Fugitives—More Arrests A Novel Method COAL CREEK, Teun., Aug. 24,—A sensation was created here Monday night by the statement that the authorities have determined to smoke the mines and thus drive out miners who are believed to be hiding in them. It has been suspected for some tlme that several of the much- wanted leaders of the riotors had found shelter in the mines, where they have been comparatively safe from pursuit, and it would be folly for the soldiers to attempt to find them. The subject of trying to smoke them out has been discussed for some days, and the statement is authoritatively made that it has been decided to take such action. More Arrests Twenty-three men, supposed to be in sympathy with the miners, were arrested near here and locked up. Several of them are suspected of holding up a mail train between Clinton and Coal Creek last Thursday night. One of the suspects is Jim Hatmaker, son of John Hatmaker, who led the attack on the stockade at Oliver Springs last Tuesday. Every possible attempt is being made to apprehend the elder Hatmaker. Troops to be reinfornced The troops at Fort Anderson are to be strengthened still further. Gen. Norman has ordered all absent members of Battery A and Companies C and F F to report to Gen. Weakley for orders to go to their commands at Coal Creek. Gen. Norman was asked what he knew about the arrest of Labor Commissioner Ford, and said: "I am informed that when Gen. Carnes entered the town Mr. Ford was there and he was placed under arrest, as were others who were in the place. Gen. Carnes received information of his presence and his position as labor commissioner, and Mr. Ford thereupon received the privileges of the town. Later, I am informed, Gen, Carnes had information regarding Mr. Ford's actions and immediately had him put under formal arrest," Will Rebuild Stockades The prison inspectors and the leasees had a conference concerning the convicts, and it is given out that the leasees will rebuild the stockades at Inman, Oliver Springs and Tracy City and return the convicts to those places under heavy guard. Had a Narrow Escape COAL CREEK, Tenn., Aug. 24,— About 10 o'clock Monday night a party of citizens through a strategy secured the notorious agitator, Bud Lindsay, who has been a prisoner here for the last two days, from his guards and conducted him up the valley toward Briceville, a few miles south of this place, for the purpose of lynching him. They were fully determined and would undoubtedly have carried out their plan but for the pitiable pleading of Lindsay and his solemn promise to go with the troops and point out every man in the mountains who was implicated in the miners troubles. His life was spared on that condition. He was brought back to Coal Creek and will be used to identify outlaws. Source: Daily Citizen, Iowa City, Iowa, August 24, 1892

I have about 80 pics, but I am still naming the files. I have G.C.Arthur, Wade Hampton Arthur, and Betty Arthur from my Arthur line. 2. FISH JOINS PARTY Clinton, Tenn. (UP) Leo Daugherty, R. L. Daugherty, Bob Asbury and Ray Jones vouch for this one. The four were fishing from a skiff when one hung his line on a tree stump. He smacked his line against the water to free it. There was a swirl and a five pound bass leaded into the air, falling into the skiff. That was the only fish the quartet caught all day. 2. BLIND, BUT A PEARL EXPERT Tennessean Hunts for and Deals in Gems, Though Sightless Joseph Gossett, aged 42, of Clinton, Tenn., the center of the pearl hunting industry, is totally blind, but he hunts pearls as successfully as any of the thousands of moutain people who swarm along the Clinch and Holston rivers looking for pearls. Gossett was among the first persons to discover that the Clinch river pearl existed. He was then hardly 21. He sold his first pearl hunter for $50, and after that became an eager pearl hunter. While wading in the river he contracted malaria and lost his eyesight, but he did not give up. The next spring found him at the head of a gang of "Pearl Hunters" and he has since been persistent in his work. He finds the mussels with his hands or feet by the sense of touch. After gathering a quantity of the bivalves he will sit in his boat and open them, slowly feeling in the shells for the pearl. No sooner has he found one than he can estimate its value in every particular except as to color. For this element he trusts his sister, Miss Malinda Gossett. He lives in a surbub of the town in a house which he owns. He buys many pearls. . He has bought from pearl hunters already this year $5.000 worth and states that he will handle four times as much before the year is closed. "I will go to New York next fall", he says. "I intend to buy a large stock and go with my sister. I am sure I would find a ready market instead of dealing with brokers as I do" New York Sun Source: Naugatuck Daily News, Naugatuck, Connecticut, March 26, 1902

    2. Parents Give Up Search For Long-Missing Son Seattle, Aug. 15 A sorrowing Tennessee couple, prepared today to return home after a futile 3,000-mile search of the Mountain wilds for a missing flier son. The flier, long since given up for dead by the Navy, is Ensign Gaston Eugene Mayes, 23. He and Lieut. Benjamin O. Vreeland of Princeton, N. J., vanished last March 11 on a flight over the Cascades in a light plane. But the O. C. Mayes didn't give up hope. With another son, Bertrand, 21, and a daughter, Bernice. 16, Mr. and Mrs. Mayes conducted :a tireless three-week search. They drove slowly along almost any mountain road they could find, climbing vantage points to scan wooded Cascade slopes with binoculars. "There isn't anything I wouldn't do to find him" Mayes said, adding that a $1,000 reward he offered for the recovery of his son's body still stands. The Mayes, weary and disappointed, said they must now return to Clinton, Tenn. Mrs. Mayes is a school teacher there, and her husband is assistant superintendent of a coal-mining company. 3. Hello list: It's rare that I post to the Anderson County list but I have a couple of questions someone on this list might be able to answer. Does anyone know of a R. M. Edwards Undertaker at Coal Creek TN about 1912? I have an invoice from him for a casket. Invoice paid by Ed Hawkins. Also a receipt from L. D. Sharp, General Merchandise, Coal Creek TN. Dated 1921. Another from Sam Watts & Co Coal Creek. A few other old receipts, ect concerning Ed Hawkins. Also a post card picture of a child, evidently signed by " LEOVELLE"? addressed to Mrs. Lucy Hawkins, Coal Creek Tenn. Last would someone have any info on a murder that might have occurred in Anderson County about August 1965? I would appreciate any info concerning the above items. THANKS, Gerald Lay MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! The Edwards House, P.M. Edwards Proprietor (Coal Creek, Tenn.), directly opposite R.R. Depot. Not the largest hotel in the berg. Not newly furnished throughout. No free bus to trains. Not the best grub the market affords. But simply clean beds and something good to eat. Toothpicks and ice water thrown in. Try Us! Pay Up! And if not satisfied keep mum. Our city is composed mostly of hogs, diggers, merchants and lawyers, named in the order of their importance. Good crosstie walks on all the principal thoroughfares." Bucks County Gazette, Bristol, Penn., Dec 9, 1897 Not sure where the Jellico and Kentucky part fits in.... ==== TNANDERS Mailing List ==== Please do not write your message with CAPS on.
