Hey Libby, Bill does put on a good fish fry. Just thinking about the fish turning golden brown with the hushpuppies and rising to the top of that kettle of old fashioned "100% pure pork Lard" is enough to make a grown man cry. I have heard stories about how back before they damed up the Clinch River and down by the Massengill Bridge and next to the Old Massengill Store the fellows use to catch Catfish between 5 and 6 feet long and they would take an old black kettle over a rolling fire and have a fish fry. Now if my memory serves me correctly James Kelly Massengill was married to a Mattie Rhea and their daughter Rella Mae Massengill was married to Charlie Lee(Joe)Johnson.. Charlie Joe was a 3rd cousin on my Moms side of the family and Rella Mae had a brother James Paul Massengill who was married to Margaret Kathleen Disney and she was my Dads first cousin or my second cousin. Anyhow if Terry Rhea reads this are you related to Mattie Rhea Massengill? Now do you see how weird one starts thinking after doing this stuff for about 24 years? You might have another branch. My dad said therewere 3 branches in/around Coal Creek: The Clear Branch (me), the "fair grounds"[Ibelieve that's John B. Rhea] and the Offet(?) Rd. set. I was 12 when we moved to Michigan. I do remeber Savage Garden(went there on a school trip in the 6th grade) (Neal Burton was the teacher). I don't remeber Rhea bridge though. I went to Lake City elm. 3rd-7th & remeber walking home the loooog way(through the fairgrounds,Lovely Bluff(always stop to get a drink from the pipe comming out of the rocks by the bridge(is that Rhea bridge?), out Savage Garden Rd. to "New" Clear Branch & on to the "old" road. We lived between "Red" Goins & Wes & Mary{Andrews} Rhea's(g-uncle&aunt). I haven't found a Mattie Rhea Massengill. Yet! But then again, I haven't started on John W.'s brothers & sister.(just found out about them a couple months ago). Seems I'm the ony one looking for this branch of Rheas. I'm the oldest of Alvin Cleo & Bessie Mae{Hutson} Rhea's grandchildren(13 of us), so I guess it's up to me. With all the wonderful, sharing people out there (this site alone has added another 25%) I'm growing our tree and trying to write a book. As I told Phyllis, family always shares. Many serious researchers are reluctant to use the LDS Web site because "there are so many errors". To me the problem is not errors, per se. There are probably no more errors on the LDS Web site than other places. The problem is that it is practically impossible to authenticate the data that you find there, even if the data itself is perfect. However, I know that what I call the IGI M batches (such as M519001) are simply transcriptions of various court house marriage books that have been accomplished by LDS members and that now have been placed online. Batch M519001 is a transcription of the Anderson County marriage book up through 1885. Batch M519001 has errors, but so do all the other sources I have mentioned. And so do transcriptions that I do on my own by going to the court house. These things are just very hard to read sometimes. You can never have too many transcriptions, in my opinion, especially for difficult to read entries. One transcriber may have some insight that was missed by another transcriber and vice versa. Here's a couple of challenges for those of you who are excellent transcribers. (I'm decent but not excellent). Go to the Anderson County court house (or look at the marriage book microfilm) and figure out who C.J. Scarbrough married on 24 Oct 1885. Similarly, look at the marriage book (or the microfilm thereof) and figure out who Thomas H. Messamore married on 18 Sep 1870. I think I figured both of them out, but it took years in both cases. I am trying to locate the names of funeral homes in Anderson County around 1910-1920. Thanks, Debbie Wilson Fehr
I just caught it. Your Teresa Prosise. I've not seen your madien name. All the information you want is in the Clinton Library. No wonder those names hit home as your in my line. Your husband is the son of Joseph Prosise son of Benjamin Franklin Prosise or g son.Your in Briceville and in the book of Anderson Co., by Kathleen Hoskins if full of Cardens. Phyllis
Forget what I just said. I have to find my other notes, sorry. I also think Susan Florence Carden is the Granddaughter of Ansil Carden. I've been gone all day and now is not the time to answer questions as I might get you on the wrong path. I just put the Carden family in my book and the writter might have all my information. My line is also the Carden line. Phyllis
Christy, The move to Indiana is interesting. My Elkins family moved to Ambia/Agros in Benton County, Indiana about the same time. Let's keep looking for a tie. Thanks Jo -----Original Message----- From: Christyo687@aol.com [mailto:Christyo687@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, January 30, 2005 11:08 PM To: TNANDERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNANDERS-L] Elkins - Anderson County, TN Calvin Elkins parents were Payton Elkins and Mary Leppard. my spelling may be incorrect. Robert Elkins parents were Sarah Varner and Calvin Elkins. I think that Calvin and Sarah were never married and Calvin was married to a Nancy ??? Sarah Varner and Cal Elkins also had another child named Leora Elkins born in 1887 in kNox county. My grtgrandfather Robert Elkins entered on his delayed birth certificate that his father was Calvin Elkins born in Anderson county TN. This has been a deadend for me for a long time. Thanks Christy Robert Elkins born 1884 in kNox county TN. He married Eula Smith 1911 in overton County TN. Their children were Haskell Elkins, Paul Elkins, Geneva Elkins and Robert Elkins. This family moved to Greene county IN about 1916. ==== TNANDERS Mailing List ==== Please do not write your message with CAPS on. It is seen as anger. You may put Surnames in CAPS. John W. Key married Lucy Shelton 3, Feb. 1846 in anderson co., Phyllis
I thank you, When you say she in in the Hoskins cemetery 5 is that the Key- Hoskins at Key Springs ? Just wondering because I didn't see that in 1990 . I think she married Isaac 30, Dec. 1850. Don't take that as gospel as I'm so mixed up on these family. In one book I found a no return for marriage. We know that is wrong. I have a note where they had a son Jesse M. Key born 5, Jan. 1856 at Oliver Springs. Mahala Bethema born 16, Dec. 1851. and a note saying Lodema Caroline Hoskins dau.of Isaac & Lodema C. died as infent. I have a letter written by John W. Key ( son of John W Key) where he is speaking of Jesse . One of these day's I'll be able to give you my Key family I'm not giving up this time. Phyllis
Does anyone have any information on PEMBERTON's in PEMBERTON Cemetery? Especially Fannie and James E. Pemberton? I am pretty certain that Fannie is my grandaunt Mary Frances HUGHES PEMBERTON, sister to my grandfather on my father's side. I would appreciate any information anyone may have. Any children listed for them, etc. This is a new area for me, and I have not had time to locate any books with information on it yet.
