    1. J.R. DAUGHERTY, merchant dies
    2. Name of paper was not listed or date....The obit with a few others were in a box my Aunt ALLIE WARD WEST owned. There is also an article with the DAUGHERTYs that were murdered in 1920's, with the picture of the 3 coffins lined up.. J.R. DAUGHERTY, merchant dies A county native whose rise from public welfare in the 1910s to prominence in the business world seemed like a parallel to the Horatio Alger story. JOHN (J. R.) DAUGHERTY, 82 of Clinton, died Monday morning in the apartment he kept at his landmark, hand-hewn stone store on main St. Daugherty, who predicted diabetes would "be the end of me" once told an interviewer that "when I was growing up, I either wanted to be a railroad engineer, a boat captain or a merchant. I don't know why I did, but I did. My cousins laughed at me, a barefoot boy, for thinking such things." By saving up his wages as a young New River teenager working as a timberman and a coal miner, Daugherty opened his first store at Fork Mountain in 1924. In 1935, he moved his business, now more oriented toward furniture and appliances to Clinton where he built the still operating five story structure with rock quarried near Oliver Springs. Daugherty was a 50 year member of the Petros Black Diamond Masonic Lodge No. 625 and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite member in Nashville. He was a member of the First Babtist Church of Clinton. Daugherty was preceded in death by his wife Mrs. BETHANNA DAUGHERTY, whom he married in 1927, and his son, LEO DAUGHERTY, who had been his bookkeeper, in 1981, and a grandson, MICHAEL DAUGHERTY. He is survived by two sons, R. L. and CHESTER DAUGHERTY, both of Clinton; 10 grandchildren, two sisters, MADIE ARMES of Wartburg, MARIE MARLOW of Monterey; half sister RODA DAGLEY of Petros and brother, LAFORD DAUGHERTY of Caryville. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev SAMUEL DEAN officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery, Masonic services were held Tuesday. 3. Yes & sure would like to visit Dinwiddie. Some of the Prosisie are in the book Dinnwiddie Co., Va. by "Jones". They were educated people but guess I was standing behind the door when the brains were passed out. I forget just where they lived in Petersburgs but it was a hot bed in the civil war and Armstead V. Prosise was Capt. in the Army & his brother George gave the Pitts speach at some school & Joseph was a drummer in the Spanish American was with General Sherman. I got to see the play as I was living in L. A. Calif. when it came out . I think Auther Miller wrote it. You know myself & Delores Dickson were the only 2 doing genealogy in the 1960's that we know of and now alot, but not one of us know where the Prosise's came from. Who ever came on that ship I bet you his name was "Thomas".(grin) Phyllis

    3. Hi John, I don't have all of my Prosisie work here at home. I have not forgotten you want some. It goes like this, Thomas Jefferson Prosisie, born 15, Oct. 1838 in Dinwiddie Co., & he is the one who married Sarah Key, Mary Clark,& Sarah E/ Webster. His father was Thomas Dudley & Rebecca Mabry Roland (Rowland) Prosise Of Dinwiddie born in 1778 & she 1807\8 Fredrick Co., Va.Now that's a surprise because I thought in Sussex Co., Those 2 came to Anderson Co.,both are buried in the Old Baptist Cem. Thomas Dudley father was Thomas Prosise who married Henritta Brown in Sussex Co., Va.His father was Thomas Prosise who married Frances Vaughn b. 27, Dec. 1735. His father was Thomas Prosise who was born in 1710 and married Mary ? I've never been able to find who Mary's maiden name was. Records in Va. are very hard to find because the records were burnt during the civil war. Most of the Va. Prosise's are buried at the Blansburg Cem Petterburg, Va. To search you almost to have to go with wills and land grant's. I have one land grant signed by Thomas Jefferson before he became President. I think my gg grandpa Thomas Dudley is the only Prosise who settled in Anderson Co..,Others went into ILL. N.C. Ky, Texas, Kansas & Missouri.. all of those Thomas's to work with was just wonderful (grin) Phyllis
