    2. Phyllis Peterson
    3. Hi John, I just wanted to tell you this story becasue if you know the right people, pull the right strings you can MAKE the goverment take care of civil war grave and still get VA stones for the civil war vet's. This is why I'm trying to find Thomas Jefferson Prosise's grave. Back in 1963 a cousin back in ILL. sent me this clipping about a Robert Prosise who died at the Andersonville Prison. He was taken prisoner in Knoxville after being sick and crawled into a wagon for about 3 days and his commander had him listed as an diserter. To make a long story short 25 years later this was removed from his record but he died at Andersonville. In 1990 I went to visit his grave only to learn he was not even listed as being there but for some reason I had his war papers in my hand so they took copy's and I had taken his family gr. sheet of genealogy. they put it in the file with a red tag saying people could look at documents. BUT I learned his body was with about 50 other unknown solders and they would would not put a marker up for him. I then wrote D.C. and given the run around. I felt there was nothing I could do for Robert. His father William & Robert enlisted the same day and his father died of lung fever at home.Eliza the mother got her son's back pay 25 years after his death , when his record was cleared. Then one day about 20 years later this James Herrbett, from Ga. wrote me asking if I had any information on this family and I was happy to hand over all that I had. Jim found first Williams grave in an old farm yard & it was still standing, then he found Williams wife Eliza grave standing all alone in the Synder Cem. Marrion Co., ILL. Then he was writing to all the right places and in 1999 the V.A. placed a marker on each side of wife & mother Eliza.. the body's are not there but on the back of the stones that were made high and not on the ground he put in writing where the body's were. Jim & I became fast friends and still are and he sent me a picture of the stones together and I shed a few tears.Over a 100 years but it can still be done. If someone wants to take on this task I can ask Jim or put the person in contact with him for his help. Everyone should read the "The Blue & the Grey" and walk through that cemetery you can feel the sadness. In later years I learned John A. Prosise was also there. In Robert's war records there is a letter to his mother and a poem "Little boy Blue" he wrote. He died at the age of 18. Just to think I had started this research and with a happy ending makes genealogy all worth while. Not only that but we were told Robert was the only unknown soldier that was asked for a headstone. 2. Gerald Lay
    3. Hello List: Just a note concerning the obit of GIRTRUE McFADDEN below. Girtrue was one of the first serious Lay researchers I met. In the early years of my research ( early 1980's ). Cuz'in John, you may remember her endeavor to get the city of Lafollette to recognize and provide help in cleaning the overgrowth in the Forrest Street cemetery. Where it is thought some civil war soldiers graves may be? She done a lot of the work herself. My understanding is Girtrue thought she was a descendant of Colonel Isaac Lay, through his son Jackson Lay's daughter Celia, as best as I remember. Is not Colonial Isaac Lay thought to have been a brother to John M. Lay of Elk Valley? MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! 3. Hi Gerald, I hated to see the obituary for Girtrue she was a second cousin once removed, we share the common ancestor's, Andrew Jackson Burris and Lavinia Beach. They were her Great Grandparents and my 2nd Great Grandparents. The Soldier that Girtie was so concerned about being buried on North 8th Street was a Revolutionary War Soldier by the name of 'CABBAGE' and there may be also other VETERANS of the GAR and other wars at this location. To her, all veterans were deserving of 'A decent well kept burial site' and I feel the same way being that I am also a veteran. She once told me on a trip to the Old Massengill Cemetery, "We Veterans have to take care of each other the Government sure ain't goin' to do it"! Yes she showed up at City Council on several occassions and raised 'The Devil' about how the City should be taking care of this site and other Cemeteries like Laborn Sharp on South 8th street, and when the City cut down the Tree's at the North 8th site it was a good thing she didn't have a shotgun handy. One family picture is there but I had a special one of my Buddy Joe Dail, (not there) No picture of Jamia Jane stone ( That's Benj. Prosise 2nd wife ) Am I asking to much from the writer ????. I want every hole covered if it's going in a book. not something that say's Living no other infro. when she has the information. I have a feeling I will stop the book I can do nothing except give her the information all over again & see what she says. $275.00 for 54 pages is a little steep for me. Thanks, Phyllis P.S. remind me to give you all the Prosise updated.

    3. Hello to all, Some of these we did back in November during our two weeks that rootsweb was messed up and I never remembered to repost so doing that now and mentioning a few others along the way. For Anderson County, Sammie Laurence added some to the Zion Cemetery, John Chase added some for the Leach Cemetery. For Campbell County, we added the Nelson Cemetery, Mt Paron Church Cemetery, Hall Cemetery, Gibson Cemetery, Carey Cemetery, some for the Burris-Gaylor Cemetery, Baird Cemetery, Nancy Adkins Carroll added some for the Queener Cemetery and John Chase did some for the Delap Cemetery. John also sent extensive information on some of the soldiers that are buried there and we have added some links that might be of interest to those on the Confederate Soldiers so many thanks to everyone on the cemetery photos. Also added to the people section Angela Meadows I owe a belated thank you for adding a 1959 Class of Lake City photo that might be helpful to some, and Barbara Phillips Haumesser, and John Chase for their donations in this area as well. Thanks so much to those that have taken the time to photo and share with all of us, and to those of you who come to see them. 3. John, I've been meaning to tell you about Robert Alexander Prosise & the 2 daughters of Thomas Jefferson Prosise. I know you will find this information on the internet but it is wrong. Robert Alexander Prosise, first born of Thomas Jefferson & Sarah F. Key was not born in Knoxville he was born in Clinton as were the 2 daughter's that died along with Sarah ( with in months). I also know this is on LDS records but it's also wrong. T J was married all 3 times in Clinton & never lived in Knoxville. I've documented this from census's war records & etc. Now, Emma Chester White and all the White girls were born in Knoxville and believe all were married there by a Rev. White. He must be related but don't know where he comes in at. but married only . The White girls came to live with John Amsterdam & his wife Sasan Eliza White, because their mother died. There was Mary, Susan, Emma & believe Fannie. I think there was 1 son. I don;t have records in front of me. I have all the Prosise's pretty documented. Sarah Key Prosise left 3 sons when she died Robert A. John D. & Charles. Charles death date came from the family Bible and he was born in Missouri during the civil war. I've never able to trace him at all but died around 1880 in Clinton or maybe went to Missouri with his father & died there after 30 years I gave up.He shows up in Census Of anderson Co. but when T J filed for an Army pension Charles was not listed as a living child. Thanks John for all of your help and when I get the time I will list them all for you if you want. Phyllis
