Hi Shirley, Are you snowed in a'top of the mountain yet,LOL! I knew you were related to the lively's and I was waiting on you or someone to mention the fact about Guy finding the skull in Frost Bottom. The first book MOUNTAIN REVENGE had names and characters switched around so that I didn't even know who was being talked about in the book at times. If I hadn't known the area and what the story was about I never would have guessed it was near Oliver Springs. I hope someone writes a book about the two little old sisters, Ann and Margaret Richards, who were murdered in 1940. The Police first alleged that Leonard "Powder" Brown, a 16 year old black male who worked for the sisters, had killed them and then killed himself, but Brown was later exonerated. Oliver Springs Police Chief Paul Ray Massengill allegedly solved the case back a few years ago and there were a couple of articles in the Sunday Knoxville Papers back in 2000 but I have never heard anymore on the subject. Who knows maybe politics got into the picture once again that does tend to happen from time to time! John __________________________________ Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Yahoo! Fraterville Miners Memorial Highway name proposed by Sen. McNally March 3, 2005 State Senator Randy McNally has introduced a bill in the Tennessee Legislature to rename State Highway 116 in the Coal Creek watershed, the "Fraterville Miners Memorial Highway". Details can be found at http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/bills/currentga/Bill/SJR0093.PDF. (This is an Adobe Acrobat Reader file.) In supporting this action, the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation stated: Like a true Volunteer, he came up with the idea and ran with it. If you would like to send him an email, thanking him for his effort, his email address is sen.randy.mcnally@legislature.state.tn.us. Proposing to name the highway that follows the route they took to and from work is very fitting and honors the inscriptions on their headstones, "gone but not forgotten".
Fraterville Miners' Circle added to the National Register of Historic Places January 24, 2005 The Coal Creek Watershed Foundation recently announced that the Fraterville Miners' Circle in Leach Cemetery has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 200 men and boys perished in the 1902 Fraterville Mine explosion, the worst disaster in the history of mining in the South. Farewell messages written by the Fraterville miners were published in newspapers around the world, raising public awareness to the dangers of coal mining and starting us down the long road toward safer working conditions for miners in this country today. A detailed press release about the Fraterville Miners' Circle is on-line at http://www.coalcreekaml.com/LeachNationalRegister.htm
Press Release: Coal Creek Miner's Festival - May 19-21 Posted: February 28, 2005 Press Release: Contact: Donna Norris, Lake City Chamber of Commerce 426-9595 or Stephanie Wells, Anderson County Tourism Council 457-4547 The Lake City Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lake City will be sponsoring the Coal Creek Miners Festival from May 19-21, 2005 on Main Street in Lake City. "Last year, Lake City held their first festival in May, Mayfest, and was excited about how successful it was," said Buck Wilson, Mayor of Lake City. "This year we would like to expand on the festival and celebrate the fascinating coal mining history of Coal Creek, now known as Lake City." The change in the name of the festival and the emphasis on Coal Creek mining history is a direct correlation to the successful events conducted by the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation focusing on the Coal Creek War, the Fraterville Mine Disaster and the Cross Mountain Mine Disaster and the recent nomination and acceptance of the Fraterville Miner's Circle in Leach Cemetery to the National Register of Historic places. "The Coal Creek Watershed Foundation has had phenomenal success in promoting the history of Coal Creek including the Anniversary Tours of the Fraterville Mine Disaster," said Wilson. "I have no doubt that people, local and regional, are interested in the mining history of Coal Creek, which is why we want to celebrate that history." The Lake City Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lake city have been in the process of preliminary planning the festival and are now asking for the participation from community members to plan the Coal Creek Miner's Festival. "Time is of the essence and we need all the help that we can get," said Donna Norris, Lake City Chamber of Commerce Director. "It is vital to the success of this festival that we have community participation." If you are interested in helping to plan the festival, please attend the planning meeting on March 14, 2005 at 6 p.m. at the Lake City Municipal Building on Main Street in Lake City. If you are unable to attend and would like to help, please contact Donna Norris at the Lake City Chamber of Commerce at 865-426-9595.
Cuz'n John and others, I did find "Mother's Blood" at the Buzz-N Market located between Oak Ridge and Clinton. They only had 2 copies left and the price was $18.95 (plus I assume tax). Nancy
Misty, This is my line. Bell must have died after the 1900 census because I don't have anything else on her. There was also a son, whom Retta, another sister remembers, but that is all I know. Bell and the boy is supposedly buried in the Lovely Cemetery (located at Ridgeview Baptist Church), but I have combed this cemetery, and have yet to find them. They must be buried under the LARGE hedges there. Thank you for the information. Nancy
Hi Misty, Tax goes for a good cause. It helps pave the roads, build bridges and in some places swimming pools. Also helps to pay salaries for Municipal, County and State employees. I'm looking for information on the Lewis Ralston and Ellen Gentry family that lived in Union Co in 1900. Both their ancestors lived in Union Co and Anderson Co in the 1800's. Below is information on their family: Ralston, Lewis, b Dec 1859 in Cole Creek, Anderson Co, TN Gentry, Ellen, b July 1870, KS, possibly Caldwell, Sumner Co Ralston, James, b bet Apr & June 9, 1891, Cole Creek, Anderson Co, TN Ralston, Wm "Bill" C Ralston, b Apr 1896 Ralston, Laura A, b Apr 1900 Gentry, Anne W, b Feb 1888 in Caldwell, Sumner Co, KS, d/o Ellen Gentry *In 1900, neighbors of the Lewis Ralston family were the Stewksberrys. Lewis Ralston's parents are Wm "Bill" Ralston, b 1817 in TN and Sarah Stewksberry, b 1830. The Wm "Bill" Ralston family appears in one of the Union co censuses for 1850 or 1860; I've forgotten which one. Ralston, Wm "Bill", b 1817 Stewksberry, Sarah, b 1830 Ralston, Lewis R, b 1859 Ralston, Elizabeth, b 1853 Ralston, Mary, b 1854 Ralston, Joseph, b 1856 Ralston, Louisa, b 1857 Ralston, Nancy, b 1858 *Ellen Gentry's grandparents are listed on the 1860 & 1850 Anderson Co censuses and are as follows: Gentry, Alfred, b 1820 in TN Unknown, Sarah, b 1821 in TN Gentry, Wm "Bill" E, b 1841 Gentry, Joseph E, b 1840 Gentry, Susannah, b 1844 Gentry, Altmaninah, b 1846 Gentry, Sarah E, b 1848 Gentry, Mary Ann, b 1849 Gentry, Dr W, b 1852 Gentry, Isaac D, b 1854 Gentry, Nancy, b 1856 Gentry, George W, b 1857 Gentry, Margaret W, b Jan 1860 a. Wm "Bill" E Gentry must have left Anderson Co in about 1859 or sooner because he is not enumerated on the 1860 Anderson census. In fact, I can't find him listed on any federal census. According to the 1900 Union Co census of Ellen's parents' birth places, he married a girl from TN. They must have left together for the west. Their daughter, Ellen was born in 1870 in KS and according to their marriage record, was married to Lewis Ralston in Wellington, Sumner Co, KS in 1890. There is, also, a marriage record for a Wm Gentry to Mary Harris in 1892 in Wellington, Sumner Co, KS, and I believe he must have been Ellen's brother. b. It has always been maintained in the family that Ellen Gentry was 3/4 Cherokee. Most of us have these stories, but there's no doubt that this one's true. Her children bear it out in their appearance. I'm wondering if there were any Indian towns in Union and/or Anderson Co in the 1850's to 1860's? c. Lewis Ralston and Ellen Gentry moved to Pineville, Bell Co, KY after 1900 where Lewis worked in the coal mines. He died in 1926, and she died in 1929. Thanks for any help. I would like to make any connections w/ these families, as they've been very difficult to trace. The family knows very little about them, and as a result of floods and a lack of interest there are few to no family pictures or papers. Regards, Connie
