    3. 3 Bandits Rob Athena Gas Station, Shoot Attendant Search for three bandits, ranging in age from 14 to 18. who robbed an Athena, Ore. service station and shot Attendant A. J. Queener Wednesday night, continued throughout Southeastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon Thursday morning. At the same time officers were investigating the thefts of three automobiles Wednesday night. One was reported to be stolen from the Milton business section, another from Athena and a third from Helix, Ore. Walla Walla city police, the sheriff's office and the Washington state patrol joined the search for the three individuals who emptied the cash register of $90 and then shot Queener in the head as they were leaving the station. Queener's condition was described as unchanged in a Pendleton hospital Thursday morning. While not believed to be critical, he lost considerable blood and was extremely weak, hospital attendants said. The bullet struck a glancing blow in the head. The trio approached the Associated gas station at 8:45 p.m. when the place was empty of customers. They threatened the attendant, A.J. Queener, with two guns. Then after this 60-year-old man had handed over the contents of the cash register without resistance they. shot him and sped away in a car. Both the Oregon and Washington state patrols and the Umatilla and Walla Walla sheriffs offices quickly threw up road blocks. The bandits were described as ranging from about 14 to 18 in age. Three suspects were picked up at Wallula junction at 10:30 p.m. and returned to the sheriff's office here for questioning. The trio was released late Wednesday night the sheriffs office reported. Mrs. Blanche Towner. who operates a dog kennel near Ferndale between Walla Walla and Milton, was held up and robbed by three armed youths late Wednesday night, according to Milton city police. Officers said the description of the individuals given by Mrs. Towner. tallied with the description of those believed to have robbed and shot the owner of an Athena service station the same night. Mrs. Towner told officers was alone at the time and the three entered the house through the back door. She gave them all the cash she had at the time which was $2. Mrs. Towner was not harmed. 1. Brice/McGhee/Thomas; Mine Owners
    2. This man Brice is known to be as corrupt as sin. It is known that he bought a seat in the United States Senate from Ohio, a state in which be does not reside. Aside from his political corruption his business methods show him up in no more favorable light. The Nashville Herald speaking of the Briceville coal mine trouble says: The present serious condition has been brought about by tbe methods of Brice, Thomas & McGhee, who now own all of what are known as the East Tennessee group of coal mines. They leased the Cincinnati Southern Railroad and raised the shipping price of coal 50 cents per ton, thus virtually closing the mines of other owners who could not successfully contend against such odds. It may be said that they have killed every mine except those on the Nashville and Chattanooga Iine and the Birmingham line. It has been a move on their part to drive out and paralyze competing mines of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, and they have been in a position to accomplish this since they secure a heavy rebate on their own shipments over lines of which they were part owners or lessees. With the Louisville and Nashville Railroad they have an ironclad contract whereby neither is to interfere with tbe other's territory, They have influenced the placing of convict labor in the mines, and the result will be to drive all free miners out of the State, Now, in fact, the only free mining group is that known as the Walden Ridge. The Memphis Commercial says: The Mr. Brice here mentioned is the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a Senator from tbe state of Ohio. He has had a good deal of experience in politics and is accounted to be quite a practical politician. He must, therefore know that it will not do in this state for tbe Democratic party to have the toilers and wage earners arrayed against it as against a party which does not hesitate to fix upon them the stigma, disgrace and degradation of contact and competition with tbe convicts leased by a corporation, which also has a deal with two of the strongest railroad companies doing business in tbe state. Labor is the paramount question of the hour, and anything that effects it deleteronsly is a thing to be dealt with as quickly and summarily as possible by tbe law-making power of the state. In face of all these things, and many more equally as bad, not a Democratic paper in the North is demanding his resignation from the head of the Democratic Committee., Our Democrats are certainly a sickly and discriminating set of reformers. 1. Calvin Disney
    2. HUNTER DEVOTES LIFE TO DIGGING IN SEARCH FOR STOLEN $85,000 HARROGATE, Tenn., March 4 - Life for Calvin Disney; 56- year-old Cumberland mountain man, is just a lot of dirty digs. He lives in a cave high in the hills near here, and for the past three years he has done nothing but pick and shovel work with an $85,000 hidden treasure as his goal. Disney is devoting his life to a hunt for a payroll board which he says was stolen by a robber band during the Civil war. The robbers, he believes, took to the mountains and hid their gold in a cave because of the dangerous times. The war eliminated the robbers from enjoyment of the money and now Disney, who says he has a map which will lead him to the payroll, is busy exploring the cave. He is confident that he ultimately will turn up the spot where the $85,000 in gold is cached, and when he does he plans to hang up his pick and shovel and spend the rest of his life in mountain ease.
