Smitherman, 85, of Oak Ridge, Rosalie Thedford Cross, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2007, at her home. Mrs. Cross was born in Spring City, Tenn., to Walter and Lady Pearl Armstrong Holloway, now deceased. She moved to Oak Ridge in the early 1940s and was of the Methodist faith. A member of the Oak Ridge Woman's Club, Bridge Club, and Lady of the Elks, she loved gardening, wild flowers, traveling, especially going on cruises, and spending time with her beloved cat Precious. Preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Thedford, who was retired from Atomic Energy Commission, now the Department of Energy; her second husband, Charles W. Cross, a longtime dentist in Oak Ridge; daughter, Patti Rose Mary Thedford; and one brother and two sisters. Mrs. Cross is survived by her son, Gary Thedford of Oak Ridge; Connie Thedford Flood and husband, Steve, of Oak Ridge; Joan Thedford Jaynes of Oak Ridge; one sister, Lillie Mae Foster and husband, Tommy, of Paducah, Ky.; grandchildren, Liane Wickham Carullo, Denise Wickham, and Summer Rose Jaynes; and great-grandchildren, Arielle Rose Kennedy and Genna Elizabeth Carullo. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Martin Fisher officiating. He was a Vietnam veteran who served his country. He worked for TVA and was planning his retirement next month. He was the son of the Rev. Earl Grady Ledford and Grace Prudence Ledford, who proceed him in death. Also proceeding him in death are sisters, Joyce Ledford, Evelyn Wooten, and Juanita Eller. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sheila Jones Ledford of Soddy-Daisy; daughter, Jedena Ledford of the home, stepsons, Rodney Anderson, and Stephen Anderson and wife, Alison, and granddaughter Kayla Anderson, all of Soddy-Daisy. His brothers are E. G. Ledford Jr. and wife, Ellen, of Gastonia, N.C.; James W. Ledford and wife, Rose, of Clinton, Tenn.; and Mack Ledford and wife, Louetta, of Carrollton, Ga. Quick question - if I have an address, and I want to check the line of owners for a piece of property through the last hundred or so years, where would I go to check that? I know it's a matter of public record...I just don't know where the records might be. I'm also not sure if the property is technically in Anderson or Roane County. Thanks!

He was born Dec. 29, 1932, in Middletown, Ohio, the son of James Robert Weir Sr. and Kathleen Lawson Weir. He is survived by five sons: James Robert III, David Jeffrey, Joseph Todd, Patrick Allen and Scott Anthony, who love and miss him. He is also survived by two sisters, Judy Weir Goode and Kathy Weir Dickey. Mr. Weir worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 39 years until his retirement in 1994. The last 20 years, he served as associate director and director of the Metals and Ceramics Division. During his tenure, he was the recipient of the E.O. Lawrence Award. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1955 in metallurgical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and his master's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1962. Mr. Weir was an avid sailor for more than 40 years. He was a member and past commodore of the Concord Yacht Club and successfully competed in numerous regattas in many classes of boats throughout the Southeast region. He was also instrumental in the early development of the sailing education programs at the club. Mr. Weir enjoyed acting with the Oak Ridge Playhouse and he was an avid singer with barbershop quartets in younger years. In keeping with Mr. Weir's wishes, his body was cremated. >From the Oak Ridger 13 Jul 2007 Mary Stuart Beil, age 61, of 105 Newkirk Lane, Oak Ridge, Benjamin Reeves "Buck" Perry, age 67, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and formerly of Knoxville, Dorothy Estes Ritchie, 83, of Oak Ridge, Gary Steward, 57, a resident of Kingsport, formerly of Oliver Springs, Many are already aware of the tragic death of Mary Stuart Beil, age 61, of 105 Newkirk Lane, Oak Ridge, on the morning of July 4, 2007, as the result of an automobile collision at the intersection of Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike. She was transported by Lifestar air ambulance and died later that day. Mary recently moved from Oregon to East Tennessee to be near her parents who live in a retirement community in North Carolina. She joined the staff of the general accounting team of Marriott Hotels in December of last year. After serving for many years in executive accountant positions in New Mexico, California and Oregon, she returned to her native east Tennessee. Having been born in Johnson City, she had a connection with, and a passion for this region. She held undergraduate and graduate degrees from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and was a Certified Management Accountant and a member of the Institute of Management Accountants She is survived by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert J. Beil of North Carolina; and by aunts, Flora Jean Waite of Florida, and Betty Clements of Pennsylvania; and an uncle, James Beil and wife, Joan of New Jersey. Born Feb. 11, 1924, in Georgetown, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Alice Hamilton Estes and Harvey Moore Estes. Mrs. Ritchie attended business school and the University of Kentucky, and was employed at the Kentucky Utilities Company for several years. A longtime resident of Oak Ridge, she married Rufus H. Ritchie on Dec. 2, 1944, in Cambridge, Mass. Mrs. Ritchie traveled to many places in the course of her husband's work. She was an accomplished hostess while residing in the U.S. and abroad for the many scientists who visited the family. She lived with her family for extended periods in Denmark, in Cambridge, England, in Lexington, Ky., in Las Vegas, Nev., and for numerous shorter times in the Basque Country in North Central Spain. After returning from a stay in India, where she learned doll-making from the American Women's Club of Bombay, she organized a similar informal group who made dolls for the Oak Ridge Holiday Bureau for more than 20 years. She won many blue ribbons in flower arranging competitions, was a member of the Arissa Garden Club, studied art for years at the Oak Ridge Community Art Center, enjoyed painting, playing piano and organ, and was active in the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. Bridge was a favorite of hers and she was instrumental in establishing a bridge club from membership in the Church. She enjoyed doing volunteer work in the Pink Placebo at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge and at the Recording for the Blind for many years. Mrs. Ritchie has two children, Susan Ritchie Snowden of Phoenix, Ariz., and David Alan Ritchie of Peachtree City, Ga.; a son-in-law, Ralph Snowden and a daughter-in-law, Gina P. I'd like to remind everyone that the annual Nelson Reunion for the descendants of Jave and Ellen Evans Nelson will be Saturday July 14th beginning at 11:00 A. M. at the Farmers Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall in the Blockhouse Valley area of Anderson County. We'll have potluck lunch about noon followed by fun and games for the kids, family history displays, old pictures and perhaps some storytelling by the older folks. Jave (J. M.) and Ellen were married in Anderson County in 1877. Their children included David Nelson, Henry Nelson, Catherine Nelson Tadlock, Frank Nelson, Tom Nelson, Cynthia Nelson Wilson, Page Nelson, Taylor Nelson, Sam Nelson and Clara Nelson Yerkes. Ellen was a daughter of Thomas and Permelia York Evans who moved to Tennessee from Knox County, Kentucky following the Civil War. Jave is thought to be a descendant of Joseph Anderson for whom Anderson County is named. Ellen died in 1925 in Anderson County. Jave died in 1926 in Illinois. As a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, Ed Clark attended Harvard University for a master's degree in business administration. For over 25 years, Ed Clark served as both the sales and general manager of the Clark-Fowler Cigar Company, a large wholesale and vending operations company serving all of Western North Carolina. Clark was also the treasurer and director of the Rollin' Pin Bakery, a successful Asheville retail baking and catering company. For many years, Clark served as the president and chairman of the board of Clark's Printing and Communication Service located in Westside Business Park. Clark was also the founder of Clark's Copy Service, Inc. in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Among his many civic activities, Ed Clark served as a director and chairman of the Legislative Committee for the North Carolina Wholesale Association. He served for several years as a member of the Mars Hill College Board of Advisors and as a director of the Asheville Y.M.C.A. An active Rotarian for many years, Mr. Clark was the president-elect and a director of the West Asheville Rotary Club as well as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church in Asheville. Ed Clark was a member of Hominy Baptist Church, the church his parents helped to found. As a sportsman and horse breeder, Ed Clark served as a director of the North Carolina Horse Council. He was president of the North Carolina Thoroughbred Breeders Association and was twice awarded the coveted honor of being named Breeder of the Outstanding Thoroughbred Race Horse of the Year in North Carolina by this organization. Ed Clark is survived by his wife, Mary K. Clark; four children, Carol C. Hensley of Asheville, Bonnie E. Clark of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Mary Jane Altizer of Johnson City, Tenn., and Thomas Andrew Clark of Asheville; and three grandchildren, A. Hunter Clark and Kramer T. Clark, both of Asheville, and Carly E. Altizer of Johnson City, Tenn. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Carl Lloyd Gibson, age 58, of Clinton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospice in Knoxville. He was of the Baptist faith. He was U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Earl Hensley. Seiber, age 86, a resident of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at Summitt View Health Care Center in Lake City. Mrs. Seiber was born April 30, 1921, in Devonia. She was born Jan. 17, 1929, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the late Jack D. and Nelle Ruth Hix Childress. Eleanor and her husband, Fred J. Dewey Sr., moved to Oak Ridge in 1951. She was a machine operator with Pic-Aire Corporation and retired with them after 18 years of service. She was a member of the Glenwood Baptist Church, where she was very active in church activities. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred J. Dewey Sr.; and brothers, Hugh D. Childress and Jack D. Childress. Mary Eleanor McCluer LaVerne, of Oak Ridge, beloved wife of Melvin LaVerne, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at approximately 11:15 a.m., at the Briarcliff Health Care Center, Oak Ridge. She had recently celebrated her 91st birthday at home. Eleanor, as she preferred to be called, was the daughter of Henry Randolph McCluer and Mary McCluer, both now deceased, of 1819 Park Avenue, Parkersburg, W.Va. She is survived by her husband, Melvin; four sons, twins Andrew and Alan, David, and Douglas; four grandchildren, Andrea, Erica, Jesse, and Alyse; and three great-grandchildren, Stella, Emma, and Jade. Eleanor was an alumnus of Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio. She was a member of Chi Omega. During World War II, Eleanor spent a stint as Western Coordinator for the Services of Supply, a job calling for ingenuity and persistence. She later worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, editing technical reports. In the area, Eleanor was active in Oak Ridge incorporation in the 1950s and other political involvements. She was active in Smoky Mountain Sports Car Club autocrosses and rallies, in Oak Ridge Playhouse and Savoyards, on-stage and off, in Oak Ridge Chorus, and in Concord Yacht Club racing, cruising, and social activities. She was a member of Civil Air Patrol, civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force engaged in search and rescue and aerospace education. Her training included National Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. She rose to the rank of captain. She greatly enjoyed travel, having extensively visited the continental U.S., Europe, Canada, and Mexico. She also accompanied Mel to air shows and hang gliding training. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, and had taught Sunday School even before Unitarianism and Universalism merged in 1961. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2007, at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike, at stoplight No. 11. It will be conducted by ORUUC's minister, the Rev. Jake Morrill. Dylan David Wood, 18, went to be with Jesus Sunday, July 8, 2007. Born in Providence, R.I., he was a son of Clark V. Wood, with whom he resided and Jane B. Pendergast Cassese of West Greenwich, and stepson of Henry A. Cassese and Elizabeth Blackmar. He resided in Glocester for most of his life and lived in Tennessee from 2002 to 2006. Dylan graduated from Clinton High School, Tenn., class of 2006, and was currently enrolled at CCRI in Warwick for computer science. He was employed at Weidele's Pizza in Sterling, Conn., for the past eight months. He enjoyed bike riding, paintball, basketball and sports in general. Dylan had a great sense of humor and loved hanging out and having fun with friends and family. He was the brother of Kyle N. Wood of Glocester and grandson of David and Diane Wood of Foster, Sylvia Pendergast of Connecticut, and the late George Pendergast. He leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins who will miss him dearly.
