    1. [TNANDERS] Cpl. Monroe G. Cox
    2. OAK RIDGE - When Anderson County Trustee Rodney Archer retrieved a file cabinet from storage Thursday and opened one drawer, he discovered a mystery that's still unfolding. Tucked inside were tightly rolled documents recalling one soldier's ultimate sacrifice 63 years ago. Archer said he was surprised to unroll the memorial certificate for Cpl. Monroe G. Cox, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Also inside the cabinet: Cox's Purple Heart certificate. Cox was killed in action Oct. 21, 1944, in Europe, according to the memorial certificate. "He (Cox) stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live," it declares. Now, Archer said, he's trying to unravel how such old documents ended up in a relatively new cabinet retrieved from storage in the county's Daniel Arthur Building in Oak Ridge. Archer said he's contacted the Veterans Service offices in Knox and Anderson counties to try to learn more about Cox, whose military service number is on the memorial certificate. If Cox had been married, "his widow never filed for a VA pension," said Anderson County Veterans Service Officer Leon Jaquet. "I don't have any records of him in this office," he said. Bob Fowler, News Sentinel Anderson County editor, may be reached at 865-481-3625.
