Hello everyone, I visit a lot of libraries. A whole lot of them. One small town library that stands out above most is the Elmer Hinton Memorial Library in Portland, Tennessee. Portland is a small town, as most of you know. But Portland has a library that surpasses many larger towns in the region. No, it doesn't have acres of books that no one uses, but it does have a great staff that is always anxious and able to help whenever I have had questions or difficulties in my research. I am most impressed with the Bailey Room, which is where genealogical information is kept, and the lady that works in there is a delight, even if you don't have any genealogical questions. The library is getting a new microfilm printer, which has already been paid for at a cost of nearly $8,000. After using the worn out printers I have seen in many places, I am more than eager to help break this one in! There are several computers available for your use. I accessed the ROOTWALKER web site on one of them yesterday in about 2 seconds, which is pretty fast. Interlibrary loans are available. Some of the other things useful to researchers are; A fax machine Copier, Computer diskettes for sale, Computer printers, Microfilm, Overhead projector, Newspapers, Tennessee History, Typewriter, Plus lots of other goodies! Now get this.....There is also a Genealogy Club! The address for the Elmer Hinton Memorial Library is: 301 Portland Boulevard, Portland, Tennessee, 37148. You can also reach the library by telephone at: (615) 325-2279 By Fax at: (615-325-7061 By email at: brussel@tsla.lib.tn.us Visit their home page at: www.portlandtn.com/library.htm I hope you get a chance to visit the Portland library, but if you don't get the chance, don't forget to look a little closer at your local library. It may prove to be a gold mine of the information you are looking for. Thanks, everyone, for being the ROOTWALKER family. Sincerely, Stan Magnesen ROOTWALKER site/list coordinator
